Max Tow Package Availability? Now a Max Payload thread

You couldn't even select the 4.10 ratio when I tried. The only option was 3.73. I know what you mean, that when you select the ratio the max tow package auto selects. But the option to select the gears is not available, neither is the icon for the max tow package.

You can still select it with the Sport. As of this post I see the option for selecting Max Tow Package and it makes 3 changes to the configuration (A/T tires, automatic transmission, and 4.10 axel). The package and axel are not available under the Sport S. And again, the dealer I went to said HQ had them cancel all their Max Tow package orders, including the Sport, not just the Sport S

Talked to my Jeep dealer. They had to cancel all orders for tow package models. Direct orders from headquarters

ETA: they still can claim best in class towing with Rubicon model

Nope. Ford Ranger beats Rubicon by 500 pounds.

Yeah, that's weird because it was working yesterday when I posted the reply but I went and checked just now and you're correct that the options are missing... Collectors Jeeps for the win?!?

Conspiracy theory: The Max Tow option will return in conjunction with the addition of a factory brake controller!

I bet the JT was rated based on it having one ("when properly equipped").

Remember the early crash of the red JT with the large travel trailer?

Hmm.. something is going on cause I just a email notification from Ebay of all places saying the gladiator sport S is no longer available.
My source is out of town this week & I'm waiting already to find out why so many of the gators are sitting in JB status.
I wonder if the 2 issues are related. Maybe has something to do with trailer hitches?? I'm just guessing here.

Agree, likely adding brake controller into configuration for max tow. Guessing price will go up $300

That wouldn't explain why the option is still standard on Rubicons. I would presume that the ability to add the package to the Sport (non-S model is an oversight).

Is there any way to verify the max towing ability? I had concerns that the dealer made a mistake on my Jeep because the sticker said Sport, not Sport S. But it did include the Tow Package, and I suppose the Convenience Package 24S makes it a Sport S? per the inside of the door the GVWR is 6250lbs. The adjacent sticker says Combined weight of occupants and cargo shouldn't exceed 1544lbs. But shouldn't payload be 1700lbs on the Max Tow option? I thought I read somewhere that there is a 150lb driver allowance to add to this number, which would make it 1694lbs (close enough to 1700), but the manual explicitly states you calculate the cargo capacity as including all occupants, 5 maximum. So what gives? Did folks like me not get what was advertised? Also, how come none of the models get a 1700lb payload like Jeep's website advertising says?

GVWR 6250 less the 4672lb (or 4695lb) curb weight (depending on where you look) and you get 1578/1550lb payload. And of course this thread has some evidence that the payload is only 1530lb.

Well, the 1700 lb advertised payload is new - it used to be 1600 lb. Either way, the payload for a specific truck will vary based on what options are put on it. The more numerous and heavy the options the lower your payload is. Payload includes all passengers, payload, and tongue weight (when towing) combined, though they factor in 150 lb for a driver. I've gathered there are two classes of suspension with different overall weight ratings. The base Sport, Sport S with normal tow package, and Overland have a 5800 lb GVWR. Subtract your curb weight from the GVWR and you have your payload rating. This is why the Overland has the lowest payload capacity - it has a lot of options standard and the lower 5800 lb GVWR.

The Sport S with no tow package is a special configuration as it is the only one with standard width axles that gets the higher 6250 lb GVWR. This configuration with a manual (lighter than an automatic) and pretty much no options will get you close to that 1700 lb payload. The Sport S with max tow package and Rubicon both get slightly wider axles with the higher 6250 lb GVWR. They are also a bit heavier, so payload will be a bit less than the Sport S with no tow. However, they also get better gearing (4.10 vs 3.73) for towing so they are rated to tow the most. The Rubicon has several hundred pounds of extra weight, so it's payload and towing capacities are actually less than the Sport S with max tow. Though the Rubicon can still haul and tow more than the Sport, Sport S, or Overland with regular tow package. Mine (Rubicon with manual transmission) should come in at around 1300 lb payload rating. There is a chart in the Gladiator brochure that shows where payload and tow ratings fall based on trim and transmission choice. I've done quite a bit of research on this over the past few months, though @basicGlad dug up the most important bits.

Oh, and the window sticker for a Sport S will be as you described above. It will just say it's the Sport trim with the 24S package. That is, by definition, a Sport S. A base Sport will not have the 24S (or 23S) package and will have manual locks and roll up windows.

I have read elsewhere that the axles for the max tow and Rubicon are not exactly the same. The thing I heard is that the carriers are different. I suspect this is just like the steel bumper disappearing and is a supply issue. Being this is about the biggest feather in the specs cap for Jeep I don't think it is going away.
