Nice test with data! Did you experient a de-rate?Went and pulled some data logs while towing this AM. These numbers will SHOCK any diesel owner... I totally understand what is happening now, and why we are all seeing different oil / coolant numbers when derates happening.
Here was the test.
1. Load up my camper and truck and take it to a scale to get an accurate measurement of weights. With the weight distribution hitch, myself, empty bed, basic tools, full tanks of DEF / Fuel.
- Jeep Weight : 6240 LB (close to max payload, with 1 person, and no camping gear in bed!)
- Trailer Weight: 3140 LB (about 50% of what it should be able to safely move)
- Trailer Frontal Area: 48ft apx...
(I have the PDF for the weights from a CAT scale if anybody is interested)
**** (This has a weight distribution hitch involved some some of the trailer weight will be transfered to the truck. Likely 450lbs with the way I have things setup)
2. Drive around town, then up i70 (7% grade starting at 5300ish ft up to evergreen 7700ft apx), capture a ton of details via OBD.
Important details.
- Air Temp 72
- 5th Gear holding 2100(ish) rpm
- 55mph
- 40-70% engine torque demand was held (not pedal position, but demanded engine torque metric (from OBD))
- Throttle pedal was about 20-40% position.
- DPF Soot Load was about 45% (fine)
- DPF regen status was 0, meaning not in a regen state.
Findings.
Near meltdown EGT's sustained... During the incline min EGT was 1090, max was 1590!!!!

The big hill climb started at about 8:43, with another smaller hill that was close to the 8:26 mark.
These high EGT's melt piston's, valves, etc. These high temps are UNACCEPTABLE, any diesel builder will tell you, this is an Engine Killer situation. Hope these Italians used titanium for valves and pistons....
I was in the slow lane, AC OFF. I was driving VERY easy, there was plenty of room left I could have pushed a lot harder.
I also tracked Oil / Coolant temps, but again these are not my main concern anymore.... frankly they are high, but I am not concerned with either of these.

High of 255 oil, and 242 Coolant. Seems hot but these are fine.....
Possible solutions.
1. Rework Intake / Exhaust (maybe a larger DPF?, DPF back exhaust / intake?)
2. Install a more efficient bigger turbo with less resistance.
3. Water/Meth Injection
I think Water/Meth Injection is the answer here while towing....
If anybody knows a respected Diesel mechanic (Denver Area), that can work out a BOLT ON, (meaning no permanent holes in my intake system) in case I need warranty work... and install a AEM Water/Meth Injection Kit on my truck I would be willing to pay a fair amount, and will test it again.. I can't find a bolt on kit for this engine anywhere....
I am not worried about the power side of the Meth injection at all, but the water element is really needed here to cool EGT's.....
Egts aren't far off from what I saw in my 2006 Ram 3500 running a stock tune, so I wasn't alarmed to see 1500+.
