Ok but a diesel gladiator does it when driving up a damn hill. It’s not acceptable. Don’t make excuses for the manufacturer’s flawed design.

As far as VQ engines go, I pushed my 4.0 VQ hard towing at high altitude and wheeling it hard all day long in 4low up at the tree line. It never missed a beat. The worst that ever happened was I had to take it easy on the brakes on the way home because they’d already had a work out all day long because of heavy use of their ABLS system and high altitude it hard on brakes also.
Who's making excuses? The VQ 3.7 runs hot on the oil side. On the forum, there is dozens of threads about the over heat problem. The 3.7 has the VVL in the heads that other VQ's don't. That system generates a lot of heat. In 2015, Nissan installed a water to oil heat exchanger to solve the problem. They only put a band aide on it. Agree that the issue with the JTD should have been taking care of in preproduction testing. Or should have shown up in testing.

At least Nissan cares enough to work on a solution. Is Jeep working on anything? I haven’t heard about anything, but I hope they are.

I’ve had five Nissans and put a lot of miles on them. The only problem I’ve had from any of them, some over 200k miles, was a fuel pump went out on the car I bought for my fiancée. It happened at 80k miles and shouldn’t have happened, but I suspect it’s her running around on empty all the time.

My JKU was a buy back and my Gladiator has had its rear diff replaced and has several other issues that it’s been in three times for and haven’t been fixed. The dealership service depts are arguably worse than Jeep corporate. I’d actually argue that they are by a landslide.

So here’s the thing. I’m not talking trash. I love Jeeps. Idfk why, this is my fourth one and the only one I didn’t have a lot of problems with was my ‘04 4.7l WJ Laredo. I’ve had Nissan, GM, Audi, BMW, Mazda, Volvo, and Jeeps. More than one of many of those brands. I never had problems with any of them but my Jeeps.

I have no idea why I keep buying them. Hell, I love my JT. Einstein’s definition of insanity I guess.

Don't disagree at all that Jeep could do a better job. As you said - no sane person buys a Jeep! Who buys a new car and immediately starts tearing them apart? Insanity for sure.

Owning one is full of compromises. In the end they take us places we would never get to and meet great people we might miss without a Jeep. No excuses. It just is what it is. Very thankful the Bronco came along and is forcing Jeep to at least pay a little attention.

I am planning ahead to avoid the issue if possible when the JT starts pulling the travel trailer. Learning a little along the way also.

Well put. I’m also glad the bronco exists. Competition is a good thing. Jeep is going to do whatever they have to do to give up as little market share as possible.

For the record both the wife and I miss our Xterra Off Road that we should have never let go. Loved that truck! Dumb move on our part, but babies bring more user friendly suvs. Always watching craigslist for one.

I had an ‘09 Frontier and a ‘10 Xterra back to back. Long story short, I traded in my Frontier for my dog. I lost zero money in the deal though. Anyway, I bought my ‘08 JKU Rubicon because I knew I was moving to CO later that year. It ended up being a lemon and a buy back, but it worked out well financially. I wheeled both my Frontier and Xterra hard. The Xterra was a lot better off-road, but the Frontier always got me there. I drug the frame rails hard going over a lot of stuff and I had to be really careful to not get body damage. The Xterra was Surprisingly great off-road. I just had to get used to the three wheel motion and hearing the frame creak from the teeter totter effect. SFA is better, but the ABLS worked damn good in keeping the wheel off the ground from spinning too much and allowing the front wheel with traction to still dig.

I traded in that Xterra on an S3 when I moved to NC because I wanted something fast and nimble, but I should have kept it. I put 90k miles on it and I put a battery, front brakes, a few sets of tires on it and oil changes. That’s it. It literally had a few thousand off-road miles on it and not one squeak or rattle. Which is remarkable after all of those washboard roads. I had water over the hood in that thing before but accident. Spring floods. Thank gawd the air intake comes in through the fenders and it had triple door seals.

Had a 90 Hardbody regular cab, short bed with a 5 speed 3L V6. Detroit locker in the rear and a Quaifle LSD in the front with 4.36 gears. Sitting on 32" MT's. I could catch rubber in 5 gear. LOL Went to a lot of places with that truck until it rusted out. Had it for 10 yrs.

It’s too bad Nissan’s line up sucks now. They used to be great. The new Frontier looks nice in reviews and the specs are good, but that’s about all they have left minus the new Z coming out and the super dated GT-R. I’m not sure I like the looks of the new Frontier, but it’s about damn time they came out with a new model.

The new Z is nothing more then a rebodied 370 with a twin turbo and new automatic. The twin turbo came out of a Q.

Yeah, I knew it wasn’t a new engine, but that’s fine. It’s proven. I thought it was a new platform though, that’s disappointing. I hope they at least updated it. Glad they’re still offering a manual.

Got way off topic here. Need to get it back on track.

I live at high altitude and deal with steep grades and I’m concerned about the cooling issues on the JT diesel as I tow my Z to the track and I’m about to pick up the new Z so don’t have the money to put into cooling upgrades. Is Jeep working on anything to address this?

I live just west of Appalachian mountains in sw Pa. The one road that goes over the first ridge we call the Summit. It's just over 3 miles long. You go from around 1000Ft to 2600 ft in altitude. 84F outside temp. I hit the bottom of it at 70 mph and kept that speed going up. Tranny temp was 214F. When I got to the top, it read 240F. I have a trip planned to go to Denver, Moab, and Lake Powell in June. I have 2 passes that I have to go over. Eisenhower and Vail with a loaded truck. When I get back from that trip. I have a good idea that i will be looking to put a oil cooler on like I posted early.

Coming from someone that lived in CO and was responsible for a fleet of 8k cars. High altitude brings our weaknesses in cooling systems and brakes. Especially, in the summer months. If you’re having that issue in the Appalachians, you’re forked.

Sorry to the the bearer of bad news.

It's going to be interesting. Wifey is from the Denver area and has family there. We go about twice a year. First trip with the JTRD. I've taken my Power Wagon with a 35ft camper over the 2 passes with no issues. Our first V10 gas class A motorhome hit the top at 15 mph. LOL. Our second class A diesel pusher towing a Grand Cherokee hit the top at 35 mph.
