I have an Apple AirTag hidden on my JT. It will ping off anyone’s iPhone if it comes into Bluetooth range, even passersby, all without telling them, and then sends its location updates to me in the FindMy app. An Apple AirTag doesn’t really alert anyone of its presence for a few days if it becomes separated from my iPhone. It take a couple of days to alert someone that an AirTag is separated from its owner and has been moving with the non-owner for a few days, at which time it will beep. If the thief is savvy enough to locate the device using an app to make it ping then sure they can find it—hopefully that’s not the highest priority within the first few hours while I am tracking it. It’s not the best solution, but it’s an option.

Airtags can be circumvented and fooled.... not a bad idea but not foolproof. Many thieves are now aware and check for them with their own device. Apple and Android could register these checks but so far does not....

Reading this thread, it is unfortunate that thieves will take almost anything. Yes it is up to the owner fo do the best they can to secure their possessions, however, saying that someone who in your opinion cannot afford a garage shouldn’t have a nice vehicle is very assuming of you.

according to your posts I shouldn’t have my gladiator because I do not have a garage.

not that I feel I need to justify my spending to someone I have never met, but it did bother me a little. (Not that I care or expect apologies especially on the internet most sh t I ignore anyway)

In my current job it makes no sense to buy a house as I move around the world every couple of years until I retire from this job. With the housing markets, I really wouldn’t stand in making any equity especially with the amount of moving I’m doing. Not every place available for rent has a garage.

yes I understand there are risks keeping it parked outside, however I have done what I can to mitigate them. Good locks, keeping the hard top on, doors locked, nothing on the outside of the vehicle to entice, keeping the inside empty or things hidden and having proper insurance.

you can have the best house on the block with a 5 port garage and still get broken into, natural disaster etc. it’s up to the owner to assume risk and take proper precautions. But to assume a garage equates to financial status is a bit arrogant.

Airtags and all other forms of trackers can be defeated very easy. Any thief that is going to hack your car will have certainly thought of bringing a radio frequency detector. This will detect AirTags and any other GPS or radio frequency. The first thing they will do when they steal your car is take it to a parking lot where they can run the scanner over the entirety of the car and make a decision on what to do next.
if it is a lojack type system Where the transmitter cannot be easily removed they will either abandon the car or bring it to a shielded garage where they can strip it for what they want.

Register the checks? How are you going to register the simple act of see if there is BT activity without actually connecting?
If I was in a vehicle and touched the BT icon on my phone, it would show me all of the devices within range, or that I've ever connected to. None of those devices would be aware that I saw them.

What I generally find interesting are the model years involved - and note, the trucks stolen are all full-size trucks and older trucks.

From 2019-2021, Ford full-size pickups were the most stolen vehicles in the nation.

Still, F-Series models had a much higher number of thefts per 1,000 vehicles than many other of the nation’s most popular car models, including the Honda Accord, Honda Civic, and Nissan Altima, which all rank among the top five most popular cars in the nation. Ford pickups’ theft rate of 5.9 per 1,000 vehicles is over twice as high as any of those three models.
As in past years, the vehicles that are most targeted by thieves are not flashy sports cars or costly luxury models, but are rather well worn older models that tend to blend into a crowded parking lot. Of the 10 hottest rides on the road during 2020, all four domestic-brand pickup trucks are not only represented, but saw double-digit increases in reported thefts. You would have to stop in order to scan for a lojack or any other non-Apple device. Lojack are placed intraframe and in a different location for every car. You will have to get out and pass the wand over the entirety of the vehicle in order to pinpoint it's exact location.

Looks interesting...Nice concept, but it is kinda a "touchy" deal to operate it....We need an actual report from a Gladiator owner to see if it is easy to use without banging it against the floor ;-) and hold up in "real-life"? Any volunteers ;-).
