I am curious if anyone has reached over 100k miles yet ? Any issues you had to deal with ?
This motor is in so many other fca products. Cars and minivans. They will go to 200,000 plus if maintained properly.

OUCH - did they tell you what the cause of this was ? Did they provide you with lifters as well ?

No one knows for sure why it happens. Bad design, poor oiling, bad heat treat.????

Crappy design.

Its been an issue since 2014. They started with replacing heads and stuff now we are onto cams and lifters.

I think its more of a manufacturing/assembly fault rather than a design fault - many VVL engines use this kind of a design and don't have any issues. Then again there are many who have gone well past 100k miles at this point with these same engines (without issues) i remmember meeting a guy that has a ram 1500 with this engine with a ridiculous amount of miles - he was buying a JT and specifically wanted to stick with the pentastar.

That is ALOT of metal to have shaved off - did you at-least change the oil after this job ? Did you see where they were caught ? That would worry me more than anything after a job like this.

The amount of "revisions" or TSB's and recalls this engine platform has had is pretty crazy. In fact FCA now Stellanis should take a look at this. Our ford and chevrolet pickups at work hit 180k miles in just 2-3 years and never do we have so many recalls.

Yes, that is a lot!!. I had to drive it about 1000 miles while ticking. I did an oil change at 500 miles and they changed the oil after the job was done. I'll do another in 500 miles just to be cautious.

5.4 3v, any chevy v8 with DoD or AFM and Hemi's with MDS for that matter - all have been junk in my experience. I see this stuff and then i see stuff where people have gone well past 200k with their stock pentastars (and even some posts where people have gone over 300k). I think there is some manufacturing/assembly flaw at play here not a design flaw, many v6 honda's use this type of setup with their vtec setup (non roller rocker for the high side) and they last 100's of thousands of miles (So i don't think its a design issue).

https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/...r-lasts-over-600k-miles-with-no-issues.32536/

I am just hoping the issues we are seeing are a 4:00 PM Friday deal as everyone i've seen thus far has been improper lash adjusters(or lifters if you want to call them that) on the intake side causing this. Could be FCA using the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the parts suppliers for these top end parts ? Don't know. Literally the only thing out there you can buy (new) and bet your money on is a 6.7 cummins (sans the CP4 pump) and deleted at that.

There are many folks out there that would never drive anything but a Tacoma... even though their new 3.5 v6's have had many issues.

I'm at 140k on my 2012 JKR with the OG 3.6 and AA left side head. It still runs perfect, doesn't burn oil, no ticking, UOA's come back showing no signs of wear. It's also ran a K&N air filter it's entire, thoroughly abused off-road life. Though I've been running Redline 5w30 in it since buying it new.

Our 2021 JT has 27k on it. Also switched to Redline 5w30 at the first oil change. Runs like a top. UOA's come back clean. I've disabled the start/stop.

On my third Ram with a Hemi. 2013 1500 had 160k miles when I traded it. 2017 1500 had 67k when I traded it. Ran 5w30 in those as well. Current 2020 2500 6.4 has 28k. Run 5w40 in it. I've ran Redline in all of them since new. None have ever ticked or shown any signs of abnormal wear.

I'm convinced these motors need better oil with high moly content to provide lubrication during cold, dry starts. I'm also convinced that FCA chasing CAFE standards by lowering oil viscosity is another cause of failed lifters and cams. You can just look at the history of the engine, when they made revisions and lowered viscosity and the resulting increase of lifter/cam issues. I'm not rocket surgeon, I just look at the data.

I agree with the last. I ran 10-30 on my gladiator 2020 trying to quiet down the ticking. Really didnt make much difference.
