Car dealers and car buying culture psychology is powerful. People on this forum, who represent an informed subset of buyers no less, go in to look at Sport JLs or JTs and walk out with TRXs. Certainly not every time, but it's hard for me to wrap my head around it happening ever. Sure some people are just flush with cash (insert Jean-Ralphio meme), but others just get caught up in the experience. As long as they're happy long term I envy them in a way, but I could never approach a five-figure purchase with that level of open-mindedness.
I'm also enough of a boomer now to not love the role of social media. People are responsible for their own decisions, but some see the influencers with their amazing lives bragging on their Broncos and feel like they have to keep up. Of course by the time the plebs' Broncos are in said influencers are on to the next car...

No, a model year can begin as yearly as Jan. 2 of the preceding year, but must end on or before Dec. 31. So a 2021 vehicle could be manufactured from Jan. 2, 2020 until Dec. 31, 2021.
Jan. 1 2022 must be a 2022 model year.
This is what the regulation is now. It wasn't always tht way.
