After lifting my JTD about 4" I need larger tires (currently 35 KO2). I live in MN where the winter is cold and long. Having a tire that performs well in the snow is a top priority. My Jeep is for on-road and light offroad adventures so tires with good road manners would be nice.

I am not over the moon about the KO2s, they are a bitch to balance, snow performance isn't the best, and neither is wet performance. I am looking at the Falken A/T3W and Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T. I am interested in feedback running these tires and other similar options. I realize the mentioned tires are heavy, I do have lightweight wheels (~26lbs) to help offset the tire weight.

Thanks in advance.

Don’t forget Cooper, they have a couple offerings. https://coopertire.com/en-us/find-tires/all-tires/discoverer-stt-pro I’m running 37” KO2 C and getting 22+ around town 24 city. The worst tire took 8oz total to balance, 2 took 4oz and 1 took 6. I have put over 100k on mostly 30” ko2 and have experienced shit handling but it’s rare. I put over 30k on the 33” Falkens, they were good as well but the 37” is too heavy, for my use

I have had a few sets and currently have Falken AT3w’s in 35’s. For me they’ve been a great all around tire. I have no complaints with the winter performance. If the price is right when I need new tires I’d run them again. The only other AT tires I’ve had are Cooper ST Maxx, which are more aggressive and nit as winter friendly otherwise I used to think I needed MT’s, which I really don’t. Two tires that I’m interested in are the Cooper AT3 XLT in 37’s, and newer Toyo At3’s they’re lighter than my Falkens, and have similar amounts of siping.

I've run both Toyo AT3s in a 35 and KO2s in a 37. I think they are on par with each other in just about every category but the KO2s are slightly quieter. I'm in MN too and I think the KO2 is one of the best all around tires you can buy. I wheel pretty hard offroad and they have taken a beating. All of that being said I'm pretty certain my next tire will be the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T. Everything I have read and watched say great things about them, they are 3peak, and the best way to know if I like them better is to try them out. Nothing beats the weight saving of a KO2, though.

I've had some experience with several tires on a few trucks (2003 F150, 2016 F150, 2020 Tundra) and jeeps (2014 JK, 2017 JK, 2021 JT) over the years, so I'll offer my observations. I think I am in the same boat as you.

I am not a hardcore off-roader, but want to be able to confidently travel off the beaten path. I also want decent pavement manners to include snow capability. This puts me in the "jack of all trades, master of none" AT tire category. I realized no tire is going to do everything, so it's all a matter of tradeoffs! I've run these tires both on and off-road in my vehicles, and my tradeoffs:
  1. BFGoodrich KO2 - really liked them at first and grip was decent on and off-road. I was not as confident in the rain or in snow. Also, on all of them (three sets), I was not happy how they wore. Made alot more noise and seemed to wear unevenly, and I rotated them often.
  2. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac - Probably my favorite for plowing through snow. These were unstoppable as long as the snow didn't get under the jeep and lift it off the roadway. Good in the rain as well. They also wore oddly and I felt (I had read their carcass is more susceptable) they were not as "tough" off-road in terms of standing up to sharp objects. Good selection in "C" load range (not as heavy).
  3. Cooper Discover SST Pro - Best off-road centric tire I have run. These things were tough as nails and could claw through anything; except light slippery snow. Big and deep lugs and not a whole lot of siping made them stuggle with that. Heavy.
  4. Falken wildpeak A/T3W - This is what came OEM on my Mojave and I liked them so much I bought the 35' version when I lifted it and put bigger wheels/tires on it. I am running them now on two jeeps. I feel like it has the snow traction of the duratrac, but better durability for off-road and trail work. Lots of siping, decent size lugs for trail grip, and some lugs on the sides to help with grip off-road and in the sand as well. So, far, they are also the quietest of the bunch, in my experience. My only wish is that they came in OWL like the other. I readlly like that look.

Out here in CO everyone loves Duratracs and Falken A/T3W for snow. I just got the MT Baja Boss AT's in 37 but don't have snow impressions yet. My outgoing Nitto Ridge Grapplers were not great in snow and neither are the Recon Grapplers.

My vote is for the Falkens if you want quiet ride and good snow performance.

I had the Falken for 2 winters a the Baja boss also for two winters. I prefered the Baja but will probably try the Toyo AT3 next winter.

I have two Tundras, same truck. One has Falken AT3Ws, one has Baja Boss AT.
The Baja Boss is hands down better in snow and ice. When the Falken equipped truck gets stuck getting up my driveway, the Baja Boss equipped truck can pull around it and head straight up the hill. They are impressive.
They only thing I have ran that was better had studs in it.

Are the Falkens old? Also how is the weight of the truck vs PSI for the footprint on the ground? I would be pretty happy to run the Baja's next round if they really do as well since they're more aggressive, would be win win!

Thanks! I ordered the Bosses and will have them installed Friday, assuming they arrive on time.

You won’t be disappointed. 2 winters so far with mine. They’re fantastic on snow and ice, and are ridiculous off road.
