5 tire rotation discussion

It’s easier to do a 5 way rotation on the ground, than a four way. You’re still unmounting and remounting 4 tires. But you only need one corner jacked up at a time. It takes me about 10 minutes. I don’t know why it’s hard to get the spare in and out either. There is literally a hand winch that does the lifting. I’ve done it at least 15 times with 37’s. No issue.
Easier to do a 5 way than a 4way? Huh??

I guess it depends on how you do it.

I only swap wheels front to back and back to front. I never move the wheels to the other side.

You’re ignoring the wheel and offset entirely.
Why would that make a difference especially if you’re using the OEM spare wheel OR buying a new wheel?

No. I’m saying that 12.5” wide tires on factory wheels are too far in and rub suspension parts. If one cheaps out and puts that tire on a steelie wheel for a spare, they’ll be unhappy when they need to use it.
Do you realize…. If you’re using your factory spare wheel…. You’re not required to install a 12.5” wide tire on it. You can easily mount an 11.5” or even a 9.5” tire on that OEM spare wheel.

The difference between a worn tire and a new spare is probably not enough to damage a Jeep. I mean, it’s not a Subaru.

Stupid me. Here I thought this thread would end up with one or two comments stating that a five tire rotation will just get you 20% more miles on the set. Wow, I never realized it was this complex.
While not brought up as much as a motor oil thread topic, it generally devolves into preferences rather than any one side of the argument being right but any one person thinks everybody else is doing it wrong if they are not like them.

Nobody is suggesting downgrading the 32" full sized spare. My point is even on a rough trail it's perfectly serviceable to get you off the trail and home even if you've upgraded to 35s or 37s. Will it throw codes for traction control if driven at speed on the road? Yep. Will it damage anything? Nope. You're already light years ahead of the stock spare most vehicles come with. It's not like it's an actual throw away, temp donut only rated for 50 miles at 50mph. It's a real truck tire even if it doesn't match what you're currently running.

With synthetic or dino oil changes of what brand oil, would you rather rotate 4 or 5 tires, wide or skinny, with steel or aluminum wheels? And does it change if you prefer a stick or auto, Ford/GM/Mopar, or blondes or brunettes? 😆

My turn. I’m 5 tires rotation religiously. 3-5k miles.
1 jack to rotate
20% longer life, 20% increased cost
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Broke a moto metal wheel in 2020, COVID times.
could not get a match. So I bought a 5 wheel/tire set.
Don’t understand all the talk about spare tire jacks and winches, 40’s won’t fit under there. It goes in bed or on bed carrier 😂
Couldn’t agree more.

I always put the face of my rim facing down underneath, the wheel remained fairly clean and it was never an issue of too much extra time to put it on. The benefit of longer tire life between purchases far outweighed the Fobs to me.
Additionally, I contacted Mickey Thompson and they sent me this rotation guide. They also connected me with one of their techs and the calculated the best tire pressure for me to get the most amount of tire life out of my tires. They also said Don’t rely on a chalk test for Bias Ply Tires, as it doesn’t work for them.

I had the same conversation with them a few years ago. Chalk tests are not the best all end all.

For Trac-Lok / LSD, would it make sense to switch the direction of each arrow?

Also see reply #30 in this thread: "If I had a rear LSD I'd have to make sure the spare ended up on the front...".

It's a choice.

4 tire, if you are just swapping back to front, you need at least one jack stand and a floor jack.

5 tire, one floor jack.
