I have a 21 overland 3.6 auto with stock lsd 3.73. Im about 99% sure the rear differential is bad. Its had a hum that progressively got worse and i had a decent amount of fine metal my last diff fluid change. It now is very loud. Just curious when other people have had this repair, does the housing get destroyed too or just the gears and bearings? Not too thrilled about this my transmission was replaced 3k miles ago.

How many miles? My I rebuilt my 2020 Sport S front and rear after I found glitter from the front diff during one of my oil changes. Turned out to have eaten a shim. The rear was still in okay shape but the carrier bearings definitely showed signs of excess heat.

Usually just the innards.

Haven’t heard of housing replacements since the aluminum center section D44 that was in Grand Cherokees. The carrier bearings could spin and the center section would get destroyed.

Dealer replaced the entire axle under warranty. The early warning sign was vibration through the parking brake cable, which was heard as a hissing sound in the center console. Had plenty of glitter in the fluid.

This is such a challenging post to answer…. How often did you change the differential fluid?
Have you opened the differential and looked at the wear pattern? A google search can show photos for acceptable and unacceptable patterns.
Inspection the spider gears would be next.
Humming can also be carrier bearing failure or pinion bearing failure…. Master rebuild kits can be picked up…. But if you are in it this far, probably time to throw down for a locker and re-gear 👍🏼🍺

I have had two previous Jeeps, a WK and a JKU that both had carrier bearings fail….. I now change the fluid every 15k and inspect at each cycle…. Way more fun than installing a master rebuild kit :(

Housings usually don’t get destroyed unless things get real bad…

here is a JKU differential with a couple ring gear bolts that backed out due to a few too many beers and forgetting locktight 🤯

Unless you are looking to actually regear to a different ratio, I would suggest looking for a salvage pull or take off rear diff. You can generally find one cheaper with less miles most times than paying for a rebuild. That is assuming you self remove and install.

I have seen both front and rear rubi axles going for $4500 in my area. I would go this rounte and have it running again in a day, 4.10 gears and lockers to boot lol

Here's the link:

The only reason I didn't post it here is because sometimes when I post a video from my channel that could help someone, there's always somebody that accuses me of self promoting even though I'm just trying to help. It gets annoying sometimes.

Yeah totally understand, some people have nothing better to do than try to tear others down, you just gotta drown out all that bullshit unfounded criticism. Anyways thanks for posting the vid, great info, videos like that are exactly what these forums are all about. Unfortunately not the noise I’m chasing tho 😩😩😩😩✌🏻✌🏻
