So I’ve been shopping around for pricing on a regear. I called some local off-road shops that quoted me at $2300 OTD for parts and labor…I called my dealer for a quote and the technician said he’d have to call me back because he didn’t think I could regear because my differential is too small for 4:56 and 4:88…

My question is does this technician know what he’s talking about? I drive a JT Overland with stock 3:73’s. I know other members of this forum who drive a JTO and have regeared. I’m a newbie to gears, so any input would be appreciated. I’m currently on BFG 315/70/R17’s. I’m looking to get my MPG and power back. I do tow twice a year, but not far distances.

My dealer just regeared mine from 3.73s to 5.13s. They also sold me a flashcal to change the tire size.
Awesome. I figured that was the case. Do you have a sport with the beefier axles or an overland?

What the technician is likely referring to is the break or spacing on the differential carrier. No need to replace the entire differential but you will need to replace the carrier to accommodate a different break height with the gearing change.

As the numerical ratio of a gear set increases, the diameter of the pinion gear gets smaller. The reduced size of the pinion gear requires an increasingly thicker ring gear to keep the gear surfaces meshed properly.

Are these carrier specs for the old Dana 44s? The newer ones don’t have the same carrier break as the older ones. They were able to reuse the carriers from my 3.73s for the 5.13s in mine.

No problem re-gearing as members have alluded to.

However, the bigger to go on the factory D44, the "weaker the gears get."

But, unless you are bashing it against rocks every weekend, you should be ok.

Deeper gears being weaker is a fallacy.

Tooth contact surface area sometimes goes up with a deeper gear set.

There are manufactures that make “thick” gear sets that don’t require the change of carrier but then you are limited to certain manufactures. From all the specs I have seen for the D44 there is a change in carrier deck height at 3.92.

They aren't beefier - just wider.
But any of the JT axle housings will handle being re-geared. Even the Overland with 3.73:1 can be re-geared as easily as any of the others.

There is nothing Dana 44 about the JL/JT axles other than the name. Nothing from the earlier D44s can be applied as they don't share any of the same parts.
