sigh . . . don't get me started. And I wish I even had my Jeep to be able to worry about a derate . . . 2 1/2 months in the shop so far. Everything is backed up due to supply line issues, lack of mechanics, people testing positive and out of the shop for 10 days. I can't decipher what are real issues and what are just morale/underachieving/general malaise
I know.....this is just the new normal.

I'm so thankful for being able to run my business without the human "Wildcard", so at least I can control the outcome......The parts supply chain is what it is. However, "IF" I could get good reliable humans to come to work and get all the parts we need.........We could make a lot more people happy!

From my observations, this is now transitioning into a situation where people just can no longer afford to repair/upgrade their vehicles. My cash payment sales are down 50% and overall sales down 22% over last year. I predict these numbers will rise with the trend of falling sales and phone traffic since Nov and thinking I'll be taking a lot more time off work this year...........Makes up for all the hours I worked in 2020!

Would directional flow valves fix this at the cooler? Preventing drainage
You can easily plumb a check valve into the system. Inlet or outlet, and you can get them with AN fittings or capable

I have yet to hear back from NHTSA, so I have to assume it's low priority or like everyone else....they are understaffed with large % of underachievers/silent quitters left over to handle the workload.
Most of them have quit and are now working for the IRS. They wanted to be able to carry guns.

Too bad I'm not closer. I could use a part time job to get away from the wifey for a while each day. She's trying to kill me with these projects around the house, and spending my Jeep mod fund money.

That would be a long commute, but at least you get good fuel economy? ;)

I installed the cooler today. Bypass filter and accessories should be delivered tomorrow. Hope to finish this weekend with time to do a run for testing.

The cooler is installed to the underside of bed in the area of the factory spare tire location. I cut out the tire carrier structure. 40’ tire don’t fit. Lots of real estate.

Wired the fan to one of the accessory switch’s. No T Stat. Tested the fan. Moves a lot of air.

The plan is to replace the factory oil filter with a bypass housing that will redirect about 10% of the oil through an external oil filter then thru the cooler. The factory oil filter will be replaced with a ED Gen2 oil filter. The return for the cooler back to the engine will be the fill cap. I like the idea of being able to see how much oil goes through the cooler and being able to use a readily available and priced Gen2 oil filter. All will be plumbed with 6AN fittings 3/8 hose. This set up is reported run 4/6 quarts thru bypass filter and cooler per minute.

A skid plate will be added frame to frame. The cooler sits about 2/3” above the bottom of frame.

The open real estate next to the new cooler will be for a Power Steering cooler.

Yes, I read that thread before ordering anything. I’ve read many threads on the subject, too many actually. I got that thread and this thread confused, thinking they were the same thread at one point.

I’ve had a few conversation with the manufacturer. I feel comfortable that the product will work as advertised. I hope to know for sure within a few days. I was also told that a kit including an oil cooler will be available soon.

The cooler location I’m using is higher than the factory oil return. I verified today. I do not want the cooler to drain into the oil pan every time I turn off the engine. Using the plugs on the bottom would allow the cooler to drain.

The cooler I have installed is double the BTU’s of the cooler in the thread you attached. I also know that the location below/in front of the radiator is not good, even with a fan. I currently have a PS cooler installed in that location. Doesn’t do much, if anything. Trying to direct air in a tornado doesn’t work.

I think my cooler location will have better flow, especially after the skid plate is installed. Debris/clogging shouldn’t be an issue either.

Fingers crossed. I’m gonna find out soon.

I plan on installing a cooler via the filter housing plugs tomorrow in my wife's Wrangler. My cooler will be installed at or lower than the plug connection so it shouldn't drain, liquid doesn't flow up hill unassisted. I believe we have the same cooler, mine is just the -8 version.

I installed my MBRP exhaust this afternoon, so I have room for a cooler now and the truck lost an estimated 10lb.

Got the cooler installed on my wife's Wrangler today. Let it idle and took it around the neighborhood looking for leaks. So far so good. Getting ready to drive it into town. I have it wired into one of the AUX buttons to run all the time. Lost about 3/4 quart when pulling the plugs and put about 3.5 quarts back in.

So far very pleased and excited. Unfortunately ambient was only 93-95 and not 105+ like we normally see. I still have the factory heat exchanger hooked up.

I hope these upload in the correct order. If not just look at the time on the radio.

1st pic - driving thru neighborhood at 32mph with fan ON. Oil temp was flickering between 194/195

2nd pic - on highway at 72mph with fan ON

3rd pic - on highway at 72mph and turned fan OFF right after taking pic 2

4th pic - on highway at 72mph and turned fan back ON right after taking pic 3

Identical experience as well, in Quartzite in the summer. I even let it idle while gassing, drove to a parking spot, then shut down. Derated as I accelerated to get onto the freeway. At least from reading this forum I knew what it was, but very unnerving still.

on page 28 of this thread there's a note about reporting to the NTHSA, I think very valuable to do this. I would hope if enough of us report it they will force Jeep to address the issue, just even via a warning that derate is near or to idle for 5 minutes or whatever.
Maybe I stand alone with this- I think it would cause Jeep to simply update the tune with less power.
