Chinesium knockoff scanmatic tool arrived. So yes I am going to attempt this with my extra ECU.

Next question.... I need a garage computer anyway. What would be a good choice....older Toughbook???....what are the requirements....will prob use this laptop for tuning and other garage uses.

I will begin studying up to learn how to do this. I am hoping you will all help me out!!!

some 5 year old not needed laptop. Most of the hack software prefers windows 7 but you can use windows 10 in a pinch.

only other think i would suggest is having a laptop with a ssd harddrive, SSD drives will make a old laptop snappy. Oh and a laptop with a few USB ports for mouse and scanmatic. See if you can find a computer store by you thats not a chain, sometimes those guys sell refurbished older equipment that customers drop off cause they don't want it any more. It doesn't have to be ruggized, especially if you only paid 100 bucks for it. just get another one if it breaks.

You can buy NUCs which are essentially micro PCs for dirt cheap these days, which will run your basic requirements no issues. I bought a $200 one on Amazon for my garage PC and its been running for years no issues. I have a Beelink one, cant recommend them enough. But if you want one that can be moved around.. just buy a used one online. You dont need crazy specs for what your needs are.

Unless somebody has bought one very recently, you're going to need to search AliExpress for one that fits the description and roll the dice.

As yet another follow up I've sent freshly cloned ECMs to both GDE and EOC/MRTuning now with no drive time on either one and received back perfectly functioning units.

Just do a search for the programmer on Google and take your pick on which sketchy website to use. Lots use Ali Express. I used TEMU.

Programmer: sm2 pro j2534 vci

Make sure you find one with a USA power cord or for whatever your local power plugs accommodate.

Options:

Kind of late to this but I'm a huge fan of used Dell Optiplex(-es? optiplexi?) for a garage PC. Pretty robust, and tons of offices use them and practically throw them away. You can get pretty decently equipped ones for less than $50 or even free if you keep your eyes peeled. Grab cheap peripherals like mice, keyboard, cables off monoprice.

I bought a used one for something like $50 off newegg and a used 1070 gpu off ebay for another $75 and run two 4k tvs and a 1440p monitor in my shop off of it. Music, podcasts, TV, youtube, and the most useful and fun part of all for garage work, spreadsheets!

If you connect to the internet and care about security updates (you should) then you probably want something that can run windows 11 since 10 is reaching end of life this fall.

Yes but all the hack software full of virus that come with the scanner are native to win 7 and xp, win 10 can work, haven't try to use 11 on the hack software

Would y'all recommend going this route instead of ordering an ECU from EOC with your vin? Does the red security light bother anyone?

The only reason why I'm considering getting the clone tool is so I can help my dad clone his ECU too. Our county doesn't emissions test diesels anymore.

I mean that's the main reason I did it initially. Why would I want a red light if it's easy to avoid it? Also not sure if that red security light may cause other issues with remote start or other features like start from phone if you use that?

Anyway cloning it first means you can send it out without your vehicle being down for a week or two. And no red light.

I would probably just put a piece of black tape over the little red light and I don't use any of those features. The main reason why I'm on the fence about it is because you have to put your faith in a sketchy Chinese clone and it'll cost about the same to buy the ECU cloner, and mail it off to EOC. As it would to just buy the ECU from EOC and have them ship it with your VIN on it

I'm willing to give it a shot though.

Red security light on a new truck would drive me nuts.

EOC fixed the red light issue. The only benefit to cloning yourself is cost and less downtime. When you send your ECM to them you have 3 options.

- Overwrite your stock unit
- You clone your stock unit and provide clone to EOC
- Send your stock unit to EOC, they clone it the same way we are and they send both units back.

*** Edit: *** There is a forth option to purchase a pre-tuned ECM from EOC. You supply just your VIN, without the need to ship your stock ECM. This method leaves the security light on. ***
