Jeep Gladiator Giving my new truck it's first good wash and noticed this... WTF? IMG_5417

On the rear of the hardtop, passenger side. It's infinitely more noticeable on camera, holes seem a lot smaller to the naked eye. Truck will be in my possession 2 weeks tomorrow and I just noticed them today.

Have had lots of rain so haven't gotten around to washing the truck before today.

What is the likelihood I received it from the dealer like this? And what would cause damage like this?

That's not damage, that's defects in the surface that was painted over the defects.
Note that the paint is smooth, uncracked, unmarked, and flows toward the holes. Damage would leave the paint itself damaged around holes, rough, edges looking chipped and so on.
That's a factory defect, IMO.
It's also possible that in the future, dust, moisture and so on get in there and freeze or cause further damage down the road.

Take it to the dealer - I see it as a defect in the painted surface and there was nothing for the paint to flow onto and adhere to, so there's a hole in the paint itself, too.
Iv'e seen this on repaired vehicles where the filler or primer had surface holes or defects and said defects were mirrored in the paint - nothing for it to adhere to and flow onto, so it stops at the edge of the defect.

Dude that sucks! I wonder how many folks when buying a new vehicle actually walk around and inspect every square inch. I never have but maybe will start now. I hope they make it right to your satisfaction and doesn't make you love your new Jeep any less.

It’s poor paint prep. Some oil etc was on the surface. Definitely a factory defect. Don’t think there will be much argument over it with the dealer. They should fix you up.

That is the main reason I avoided buying one with a painted hardtop. @ShadowsPapa is right, that is a paint defect from bad prep when was painted.
I'm just happy it's on a removable top and not a botched job on the body 👍🏻 thank you @ShadowsPapa.

I will report back. Quick question for those that bought from dealers not in their home town... The dealer I got this from isn't terribly far but inconvenient enough for me to want to avoid taking the drive... Would a local dealership handle warranty work like this? Will I need a referral from the purchasing dealership?

Any dealer should do warranty work.

Who doesn’t inspect every square inch of the new vehicle you’ve paying so much money for?

Looking at just the picture it looks more like a body panel than the roof, but either way if that’s not some sort of defect I would sware I was looking at what an ice pick would do.

Stuff still gets missed. Nobody is walking around with a body shop paint inspection light and nose to the body catching everything.

After sale, I have found painted over spot weld slag on my last Gladiator that was not readily noticeable until I first washed it.

Even as anal and detail oriented as I am, I have missed more than once. I was driving a new car home when I realized the driver door had a bow and the lower edge missed the seal by enough you could feel cold air coming in.
It happens. Even at the factory. My father was a chief inspector in a factory for years and could tell of things.

Having repaired, painted, restored quite a few vehicles over the years, enamels, lacquers, fillers, all sorts of surfaces including plastics and aluminums, I'd bet fair money on surface prep. You should see what silicones will do.....PERFECT circles in the paint.

Like Justin said - any dealer "should" take care of warranty things.
I'm lucky here - the two closest dealers each have "collision repair" shops, or body shops, so don't have to send things out to a paint shop. The collision shops, like many other businesses, are separate entities for the sake of business, taxes and so on, but since they are connected in name and other ways, they do tend to do more Jeeps than anything else.
One told me that they don't have their own glass guy, but they have someone they have used for years for their Jeep glass work - and it's not Safelite.
If you have a dealer close by that has a collision shop/body shop on the property, that would be where I'd lean, but any dealer would be paid the same for warranty work, whether they sold it or not.
One dealer here takes care of customers "who bought elsewhere" hoping you get your next new vehicle from them.
