Update: got confirmation email with call sign on Tuesday. So no issues, but "You're all set, please allow 2-7 days for us to process your application" would have been nice. :) All legal now!

With a valid call sign/license you are more likely to gain access to repeaters and gain the help of *LEARNING THE TECHNOGLY* from a community of enthusiasts then being an outsider asking for help *TESTING YOUR SETUP/ OR ACCESSING THE COMMUNITIES SHARED NETWORK OF REPEATER HARDWARE*.

* edited so people don't fly off the handle making wild assumptions.

Sorry but if your "community of enthusiasts" calls people outsiders and denies them help because they dont have some proper call sign you approve of, I wouldn't call that a community at all. Sounds like a bunch of reach around cult members to me.

I guess its ok not to get an off road wilderness permit where required. Why do I even need a drivers license? Ok, I'm never going to pay registration on my JT ever again.

Keeping this more on track, so a dozen or more offroaders are all using GMRS and they all have a valid GMRS license but you. Do you think they'll think your special at that point?
With the exception of the wilderness permit (paid for in taxes which is a money grab also btw) the examples you state are a little extreme and are apples to oranges but whatever... serious question...have you any information if anyone has been fined or worse by transmitting on a GMR/FRS radio without a license while wheeling?? How would they tell if i was using my FRS handheld vs my GMRS radio? ( ya I know they will triangulate my location while I transmit lol) Home base station sure and Ham I totally get but GMRS is todays Cb..and I have never seen or heard ANYONE get busted for improper use of a CB-GMRS/FRS which there are FCC guidelines also IE obscene language, miss using and or broadcasting on emergency channels etc. The FCC license is a TOTAL money grab that I will not partake in UNLESS I had the need to use a repeater and or home base station...and in answer to your snarky question no I dont think I am special and I dont give a care what others think. I wheel a lot and i have NEVER asked if ANYONE had a GMRS license while wheeling.. chill brother..enjoy wheeling and quit worrying about others that have NOTHING to do with you

Woah, hold up. First of all, are you just here to troll? Because this is a technical thread, and the topic is clearly identified. I'm not a fan of diesels, but I don't dive in there just to tell people I disagree with them. Second, whether or not you thin it's a stupid law, it's still a law. Lastly, no one would withhold help because someone doesn't have a license- the license is intended to get people to follow the rules, which is important to ensure that people can be heard, who need to be heard, and to prevent undue interference.

I finally got tired of waiting; decided 1-cent per day wasn't that much better than 2-cents per day.

Having access to repeaters is nice when you are in an area of poor coverage and can't get a SOS out any other way.

At one time I ran several mountaintop GMRS repeaters in So Cal. We had occasional freeloaders that didn't think they needed a license or my permission to use my repeaters. One guy was really special and claimed since the signals from my repeaters crossed over his property line he had full rights to it for free. He was also a "Kalifornia State Citizen" and said he didn't need a GMRS license or a CA drivers license or to pay taxes, etc. After months of working with the guy it got very close to him spending some time in the hospital and he finally got the message.

Sorry if I sound a little anal about radio licenses, but when something reminds me of that special guy I get a little irritated and my eye starts twitching again.

I'm already on some gov't lists, so why not another? When I finally get off my butt and get my amateur license, I'll be on one more.

The license requirement likely keeps 80% of GMRS users (more accurately FRS users) from dicking around. We've had the inexpensive Midland FRS/GMRS handhelds for years without a license.

And I know there's more than a handful of radio operators who have those all-in-one radios. I don't have a problem with that. For some reason the gov't does.
