While driving around my subdivision, I counted 24 Jeeps. Jeeps of all models, not just one. One neighbor has two Wranglers and a Gladiator in his driveway, really nice guy. There is another guy down the street that has a Wrangler totally kitted out like he's about to cross Africa. Huge tires; 6 of them, obvious lift kit. 4 on the vehicle, one on the tailgate rack (with two Rotopax, naturally), one on an overhead full size rack that was called, back in my day, a "safari rack", all the same size tires. On that safari rack he has 2 jerry cans and 2 Scepter water cans above the front seats. A cargo box and full size shovel and axe stored next the the 6th tire. On the sides of that rack he has 2 short recovery boards; 1 each side, a roll of rope and a snatch strap. Big metal bumpers, front and rear, the obligatory winch up front. Two whip antennas, I assume a CB and HAM radio.
This cat is ready to roll.
I've only seen it at the local supermarket. It's his daily driver. I asked my neighbor (the one that knows everyone's business), "Has he EVER taken it off road ? That thing must weigh a ton !! Roll over a brick and it'll flip, it's so top heavy !!" My neighbor chuckles and said, "No he hasn't, I asked him. He joked that he doesn't even know if the 4WD works yet. Hell, I've never seen it dusty, much less dirty !! He pulls everything off, washes it and puts it all back on.".
Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm all about prepping your vehicle as you like, but prep it for the task at hand. You can own all that gear, but put it on when the task calls for it (going off road). I have a ton of camping gear, but it stays in the house until I go camping. Until then, it sits in cargo boxes, at the ready. Sure, putting some stuff in/on your vehicle makes total sense. Some. Jack, shovel, first aid kit, stuff like that, minimalist lightweight things. This guys Jeep looks like he's about to chase rhinos across the savanna....tomorrow. Not go to work and come home. Granted, when you look at it, your jaw will drop, it's impressive, in the layout AND the amount of coin dropped. But then reality slaps ya and you ask, "Why ??".
I'm a true believer in "Your Jeep, Your Rules". I have never talked to the guy because I know at some point I'll say, "Seriously ? Why ??" and I don't want to annoy a fellow Jeeper. Some may say, "Because he can." My response, "Just because you could, doesn't mean you should.". I own a couple nice suits, but I don't leave one in my vehicle for a sudden wedding or funeral. If I need it, I go get it.
I haven't seen that Jeep in a while, I'm not sure if he moved or sold it. Or maybe it turned turtle somewhere because he finally went off-road and it's still on it's back, huge tires slowly spinning....
Is it just me ??
