Retired. Finally !!
While driving around my subdivision, I counted 24 Jeeps. Jeeps of all models, not just one. One neighbor has two Wranglers and a Gladiator in his driveway, really nice guy. There is another guy down the street that has a Wrangler totally kitted out like he's about to cross Africa. Huge tires; 6 of them, obvious lift kit. 4 on the vehicle, one on the tailgate rack (with two Rotopax, naturally), one on an overhead full size rack that was called, back in my day, a "safari rack", all the same size tires. On that safari rack he has 2 jerry cans and 2 Scepter water cans above the front seats. A cargo box and full size shovel and axe stored next the the 6th tire. On the sides of that rack he has 2 short recovery boards; 1 each side, a roll of rope and a snatch strap. Big metal bumpers, front and rear, the obligatory winch up front. Two whip antennas, I assume a CB and HAM radio.

This cat is ready to roll.

I've only seen it at the local supermarket. It's his daily driver. I asked my neighbor (the one that knows everyone's business), "Has he EVER taken it off road ? That thing must weigh a ton !! Roll over a brick and it'll flip, it's so top heavy !!" My neighbor chuckles and said, "No he hasn't, I asked him. He joked that he doesn't even know if the 4WD works yet. Hell, I've never seen it dusty, much less dirty !! He pulls everything off, washes it and puts it all back on.".

Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm all about prepping your vehicle as you like, but prep it for the task at hand. You can own all that gear, but put it on when the task calls for it (going off road). I have a ton of camping gear, but it stays in the house until I go camping. Until then, it sits in cargo boxes, at the ready. Sure, putting some stuff in/on your vehicle makes total sense. Some. Jack, shovel, first aid kit, stuff like that, minimalist lightweight things. This guys Jeep looks like he's about to chase rhinos across the savanna....tomorrow. Not go to work and come home. Granted, when you look at it, your jaw will drop, it's impressive, in the layout AND the amount of coin dropped. But then reality slaps ya and you ask, "Why ??".

I'm a true believer in "Your Jeep, Your Rules". I have never talked to the guy because I know at some point I'll say, "Seriously ? Why ??" and I don't want to annoy a fellow Jeeper. Some may say, "Because he can." My response, "Just because you could, doesn't mean you should.". I own a couple nice suits, but I don't leave one in my vehicle for a sudden wedding or funeral. If I need it, I go get it.

I haven't seen that Jeep in a while, I'm not sure if he moved or sold it. Or maybe it turned turtle somewhere because he finally went off-road and it's still on it's back, huge tires slowly spinning....

Is it just me ??

Old man rant over....

I can totally understand your point of view…. I get it….. and I can agree…However…

Who cares what your neighbors are doing? If you‘re spending more time paying attention to what your neighbors are doing or not doing, you’re probably not living YOUR life to its fullest. Is there a saying….?? Pay attention to what’s in your own yard. 😉

Businesses and companies (who make all that gear and aftermarket equipment), they don’t care who you are or what you’re going to do with it. Buy whatever you want… you support businesses and support the economy.

Maybe the guy has a dream to go overlanding…..and for whatever reason, he can’t. Or perhaps he used to do it when he was younger and misses it. Our vehicles can be an ‘escape’. Having his rig equipped might give him happiness just by looking the part.

Just sayin’…..and no offense of course. 😉

The only thing I care about is if a jeep driver is acting like an asshole out on the road.

What they do to their vehicle is their business. How they use it is their business.

How they interact with other drivers is all that matters.

I believe in live and let live, and have never passed judgment on peoples' vehicle choices, habits, etc. I could not care less. But what I will say is that we are currently living in the most consumption based, narcissistic "look at me" society in history. Social media and sites like Instagram, etc. have promoted this.

A very large number of people are showing off online to try to portray an image that may or may not be accurate. Personally speaking, I am barely comfortable even posting pics of my stock Jeep here, and prefer a low profile in life in general, so I don't really "get" that whole scene.

I equate it similarly to those who are classified as “Preppers”. Waiting for the end of the world. Until they “need” it they act and look “strange”. But if the need ever occurs they will be the first to say “I told you so, now get the hell off my property or I’ll shoot”! Lol

Heck, I'm a prepper because I live in earthquake country. When I was living in Northridge and that quake hit, there was no fuel for two days. No water, no electricity etc.

We were marginally prepped back then, had water, enough food to last a few days. But no electricity etc.

Now, I think back to all the things we could have used, and I make sure we have them.

Luckily more Punks are driving Raptors, Broncos, and this gizmo LR calls the new defender 😂🤣😂🤣

I have a 2x8 as a bed divider and milk crates for storage. I have blue jugs that will fit into milk crates to bring my drinking water (spring water) back from my ranch. Most of those organizer inventions just don’t work for me.

I don’t lock my doors because thieves cause too much damage, my UV protection is dirt, I keep a rusty hand saw (nobody wants it) in the bed to cut limbs and trees across my path.

I chuckle at anyone calling me a “Prepper”, I live the life I’m a doer 😂🤣😂🤣😂

When it comes to “Off-Road” comments and advice from non-doers my reply is “I’m off-road too much for all of that crap” 😂🤣😂🤣

Shooting, hunting, killing, feeding myself is the same thing. 🤣😂🤣😂

I don’t pack, I throw stuff in the bed of the truck.

And “Ducks” are a woman thang 😂🤣😂🤣😂

I stay prepped when on the road…….. for a flat tire or a fire. Everything else gets stored away where I won’t lose it because “that guy” is always on the road. You know the one. That guy who blows passed all the traffic on the shoulder to get ahead of half the line. Or the one that pulls out in front of traffic because they’re looking the wrong way. I don’t even keep the full recovery kit in the Jeep unless I’m hitting the dirt.

I don't get it either, but I've never understood why feel the need to present themselves as something they are not, as common as that is today. Then there's my aircraft background, where you don't use four bolts if three will handle the load (plus safety factor)... anything more costs weight and/or money. But hey, have at it... the sales keep the prices down for those who really need the stuff.

Even here I note that most of the discussion about lifts and larger tires revolve around "I like the way it looks", not, "What do I need to go offroad to xxxx?"

I would say who cares what everyone else is doing with their vehicle. I can say in my case ever since I was a kid I wanted a fully built jeep that I could take anywhere. I finally have it and I love the way it looks so it stays that way and I don't care what anyone else thinks about it. It's my vehicle and it will be built how I want it. The items stay on it cause 1.) I like the look of it with them on it and 2.) I don't have anywhere else to store them so they stay on it. Plus it makes it easier for when I take it out everything is already ready to go.

My buddy has three turbo'd vehicles, all making 750HP or better. None of them have been more than a couple miles from the house, one went to the drag strip several years ago. The third one is going to go on a drag and drive event. Some day. As im told.

He has money and likes building stuff. Doesn't necessarily have the time to use any of it (a different problem all together).

I have a 1 Series tractor for an acre of land. The neighbors probably laugh at me as I toil around on it. But I wanted it. Im just a big kid that wanted a cool toy - and I do have some use for it....sometimes.

Im not a farmer - we only have two cats and the only thing we are growing is grass. But I wanted it, I can afford it, and I have fun making dirt piles for the kids to jump their bikes and RC cars off of.

This fella with the African safari Jeep may have dreams of such, or he may just have too much money and is larping for rich folk.

The way I see if - if it's bringing someone happiness and not hurting me, I like it.
