My local ROFO must have some pump issues, it took 25 minutes to fill up today. However I learned that if you’re patient, you can stuff 19 gallons with only minor spillage…??

Hopefully you are not topping off after the initial click shutoff? Bad for the EVAP and charcoal canister.

Under certain circumstances, and with about 8 or 10 miles left on the remaining countdown, you can get 21 in. And that's with no spillage. It was as low as I'd ever run this truck, and I'd have been in deep doo-doo with my wife had I been mistaken about being able to make it to the next station.
Normally 19-20 is the max mine will take if I run it down to the point there's nothing left of the dilithium crystals

I thought it was a 22 gallon tank. Did I read that wrong?

No it is a 22 gallon tank. I’ve ran it down to single digits on the DTE and the most I’ve ever put it was 19.5 gallons.

The spillage OP mentions might be the burble issue some of us have had happen occasionally, where the fuel hose clicks off, but some fuel will splash back out as though you overfilled it.

I haven't gone very far after the fuel light comes on, which for me is just under 18 gal.

I believe the reporting is purposely skewed to keep drivers from running the tank dry and burning up the fuel pump.

I have run it low a couple times, while traveling, but never got more than twenty gallons in it. I usually fill up when it gets down between a half and quarter full.

Unless the concrete by the pump is a perfect 0 degrees - no pitch, no roll at all, perfectly level all directions, you may not get more than 20. Doesn't take much "off level" to make a difference.
I know they'll take over 20 - even over 21, if sucked low enough.......... but I don't like running that low - especially when gas stations are a few miles away.
You just don't know how accurate that display is as far as miles remaining.

I’ve noticed something strange, my range is much higher on my overland than it was on my Mojave and Rubicon. I get like 500 miles on a full tank and on my other trucks I got like 380 max.

So you are averaging 25 mpg? Average? With sometimes more than 25 mpg? On a new truck?
Good luck. Even bone stock driving for mpg to try to best my wife's Jeep's mpg, I couldn't touch over about 420 or so.

Is this actual range, or possible range being reported by the computer? Gas or diesel?

My possible range can be crazy high depending on conditions and average at the time I fill. It's usually back down to reality by the time I hit half a tank.

Yup. Engineers learned to compensate for the loose nut at the steering wheel interface. There's always padding in these because they're never 100% accurate and you know someone would be complaining but I had 5 miles left! when they ran out of gas somewhere.

I've been about 5 miles past zero when a planned fuel stop was closed and put in just under 20.
