Most Friday evenings I do the same 85 miles trip after rush hour. I can vary from 18 mpg to once on the trip I hit 22 mpg. generally I'm just under 20 mpg. This is flat and sea level. I probably had a strong tail wind when I got the 22. I see between 17 and 18 for my daily commute generally.

The air dam or the skid plate?
The air dam for sure. I dont know if the Rubi or Mojave has the same attach points to the OEM bumper. But looking at the skid plate all of the connections (except a couple) are to the OEM bumper.

Should be taking a decent highway drive today so I'll be resetting my gauge just to see if this is only city related (it actually says 10.9 as of this morning on a completely stock Mojave). Only problem is that most of the drive is on a highway that traffic is driving at ~ 75mph or so which I know I know is not ideal for MPG.

Both the air dams and skid plates get removed on many aftermarket bumper installs.
But many aftermarket bumpers come with a skid plate. Do I need mine if I don't have a Rubicon or Mojave?

If the aftermarket bumper comes with a skid plate, I would install it. Whether or not it's really needed depends on the model and where it will be driven.

It's not much protection, but I would want the big air dam just to try and keep as much mud as possible off of the front end and out of the lower radiator section. I cut a notch in my air dam and reinstalled it after mounting the front hitch receiver.

any MPG claims need to be backed up with a description of terrain. Hilly/mountainy lands are going to suffer compared to flatlanders.

And if the vehicle has a full length bumper or a stubby.

When I first got my Mojave 3 months ago I spent a lot of time idling in my drive way (many hours on and off for several weeks as I learned how she worked), it stored this and my around town was really bad initially with this initial state hanging around like an anchor.

Hit the reset on the the gas mileage parameter/start-fresh from there and than monitor it in real time with that view in your face as you drive. You may learn a thing or two.

Anyway, after doing so my around town is more reasonable now.

Update:

Did two purely highway trips this weekend (roundtrip from Chico, CA to Monterey, CA ~ 250 miles one way). Didn't measure at the gas station, just purely off what the vehicle tells me and resetting it right before I begin the highway drive.

Way down -> 17.2
Way back -> 18.1

Now that I'm content with and is about what I was expecting for highway mileage with stock Mojave tires/height/bumper.

Hopefully city improves from the 10.9 as time goes on. I know the big thing that is hurting city mpg is not the terrain (it's relatively flat where I drive daily) but the distance. Most city driving is about 5 miles at a time so I know the engine is barely getting warmed up by the time I park it again.

2021 Mojave with the trailer tow group (4.10 gearing). I'm running 35" tires but they're only a net gain of 4lbs. I DO like to get to speed but wouldn't call my acceleration ridiculous. I also have a full bed rack with 2 Rotopaxes.

That being said, I average about 14mpg and given current prices, it's a tough pill to swallow. Also, I'm in Texas and don't have much in the way of elevation change, but constant small dips and hills. I see quite a few of you do MUCH better than I do and I gotta say, you've got me jealous!

I see you are located in Dallas. That means doing at least 80 MPH and being in the slow lane on the interstate. So 14 MPG does not surprise me.

I ran 35's on my 2020 Rubicon with 4.10's and easily got 17 MPG on average but that was driving a conservative 65 MPH for interstate use.

MPG's are all over the place though on our Gladiators and most of the sub 15 MPG has more to do with a drivers driving style than any mechanical issue causing the low MPG numbers.

Im running stock tires on my Mojave (AT3) but dont think Ive ever dipped below 15mpg pulling a trailer no less. Commuting mix I get around 17 with 15-16 pure town and 17-20 hwy 70-75. This is Texas. At high altitude cruise of 65 -70 it can hit 25mpg! These things are probably far less aerodynamic than a brick!
