OEM inverter question/help

I have a 22 Ecodiesel after research, I ordered all the parts needed to add the outlet in the factory location in the bed. Got everything installed, set it up in JScan and nothing…. What I didn’t realize is that I don’t have the outlet in the rear passenger area. So no inverter at all, you can imagine my disappointment.

My question, is it possible to install the factory power inverter under the dash? Is the wiring in place, and I just need the inverter? Would I have to install all the wiring? Is this even possible? I’ve searched here and the internet and haven’t found any info. Just looking for some help. Otherwise I guess I’ll have a nice new switch and outlet that are great decorations.

There have been no reports, that I am aware of, for anyone installing the inverter. The factory inverter is only 400 watts total, shared between the two outlets. Your best option would be to get an inverter to match your needs and then wire it to the outlet you installed in the bed.

I had to reread the OP’s post - so you don’t have the 110 outlet that faces the back seats? What the?! I didn’t know that some of the gladiators came that way. On my 21 JTM that’s listed as standard equipment .

edit: on my wife’s 21 JTHA, she has it, and it’s not even called out on the build sheet.

My car has the 230V AC outlet in the bed only.
Listed in the build sheet as optional equipment.

I would definitely wire in something that is a lot more robust than the factory static inverter. 400 watts is good for maybe charging a notebook or something with low (really low [less than 3.5 ampres] current requirements). I think a 2 to 2.5 KVA inverter would be a good start for bed power. Just don't forget to fuze the input. The inverter should handle the output fuzing. Make all that work installing worth the effort.

I plan on just putting in 12volt with heavy gauge wiring to the bed and then if I need a inverter I can just plug into that. I mostly need it for my 12volt cooler . I've got all the parts I need just need to get around to doing it.

If you have the factory inverter with the outlet on the back of the center console, you can do a bed outlet install mode with OEM parts.

If you do not have the factory inverter install, it is not economically feasible to do all OEM parts and to date, no one is known to have done it and just went with a aftermarket inverter installation.

The below video has a overview of doing the OEM bed install if you have the inside inverter and outlet. Video description lists the parts needed.

Yes I have leather. This is the 4th jeep we’ve owned in the generation, but the first to not have the rear outlet. 2018 Rubicon, 22 392, and a Mojave all had it…. Didn’t even think to check.

Honestly, for this, you're probably better off with a portable powerstation. You wouldn't want to use that inverter for long without the JT running anyway. Black Friday sales probably still on and nice units have been on great sales lately.

This is what I did….. but I don’t have the outlet in the back of the console.

Then I will be the bearer of bad news and say you are hosed then trying to make it a all OEM install as the rest of the interior stuff like the actual inverter and probably some of the remaining wiring is not there.

There is other threads people have posted on this and lacking the insider OEM inverter, nobody known to date has pieced a OEM inverter install together. Final conclusions were to abandon the OEM route and go with a aftermarket inverter install.

Could this have been an oddball covid shortage build?

Agreed that I wouldn't bother with the OEM inverter unit itself. It runs my fridge happily, but my Ecoflow powerstation freaks out if I try to charge from it. Goes into a charging error message, and has to be power cycled to to clear it. Not good.

However I do like the built-in power button on the dash (lower left) and it would be nice to incorporate that into a clean aftermarket inverter install.

those power plugs and oem inverter are a bit of joke. Basically 3.5 amps of power.

for perspective a corded construction quality drill will pull 7 to 8 amps.
A power cooler looks like it draws about .5 amps at 115 volts.

For charging phones and a small fan - run 12v back there, skip the 110.

I charge my phone, tablet, hearing aids, etc. in the bed USB outlets I installed and could even run my wife's USB powered fans with it. These days you can get whisper quiet nice fans that run on battery and recharge via USB. on low one of her fans will run all night before needing to be recharged - via USB.

2 USB ports to charge things, a 12v outlet (like the one in the dash) and a volt meter and switch ->

If all i needed was to charge things or run a small fan - forget the inverter! Then you are converting from 12 volts to 110, then back again to charge the phones - a waste of energy.

My wife had our daughter-in-law bring us back some really very nice battery powered portable folding fans that recharge via USB from Korea - that's where we first saw them. They are a big deal over there. (my wife sweats at the drop of a hat and even has a USB rechargeable fan she can wear around her neck)
