As I was reading yet another mpg post here, I had a thought.

Who is getting 20 mpg + or what could we do to get better gas milage, real or totally outrageous.

If you have a 2 door JL with the 4 cylinder turbo, with the highway tires you can get about 24 mpg.
In my Wife's JL, 6cyl, she was getting 19-20 with Highway tires. She dropped to 18 with AT tires.

Here are some thoughts to help improve mpg.
Anyone every put a bug deflector on their hood and notice an improvement with mpgs?
What about one of those big roof scoops like the big rigs have?
Maybe some fender flares that are more aerodynamic.
Or what about a pointed grille.

Here is what AI came up with:

1777983194019-of.webp

Some Features:

  • Active shutters that close at high speeds
  • Tapered rear bodywork for even less drag
  • Lowered suspension to reduce under-car airflow

  • Frontal Drag Reduction: Closing the classic vertical grille and smoothing the front fascia can reduce drag by nearly 10%, contributing to a 5% bump in highway MPG.
  • Rear Bed Aerodynamics: The sloped "fastback" bed cover prevents air from swirling in the open bed, which is one of the biggest sources of turbulence on a truck.
  • Higher Speed Gains: Aerodynamics account for roughly 50% of fuel use at highway speeds. You'll notice the most significant savings during long trips at 65+ MPH.

AI says that this design will get:

Estimated MPG Breakdown
  • Highway: 25–26 MPG (up from 22 MPG)
  • City: 17–18 MPG (up from 17 MPG)
  • Combined: 21–22 MPG (up from 19 MPG)
AND yes, I know I must be bored and have way too much time.

Hard PASS, on the concept car... I've never owned a Jeep that gave me GREAT gas mileage, why start now. :CWL:

Interesting. Makes the decision behind the Cyber truck's shape a little more reasonable, still ugly but a little more understandable.
Not to derail the thread but I was ambivalent on the Cybertruck until my daughter got one and I got to ride and drive it. It is BY FAR the most advanced automotive technology on wheels out there!!!

The ride is amazingly smooth, and the acceleration is just ridiculous, especially for a beast of that size/weight. Tons of room for luggage and "stuff in the back and the self driving is flawless (better than a human) including in busy traffic in the city with multiple levels of aggressiveness that you can tailor to your needs. It even parks itself when you get to your destination and it will pick you up in front of the door when you are done, all by itself. And it's tops as far as safety of the occupants which is why my daughter and son-in-law bought it since they have two babies to protect.

It's incredibly comfortable with tons of room front and back and my granddaughter LOVES that she can play games on the rear display while we travel. I've been in limos that are not as nice in the rear seat in this truck. As a bonus, the camera's record everyone that comes close to the vehicle and it's a hoot to review all the folks that try looking in through windows etc when the truck is parked anywhere. Remember that next time you get close to one, the truck is watching you....

Quite frankly, if the prices ever come down to the $70k level I'm buying one.

MPG..... it is all about how you drive and where you drive. The Jeep is a streamlined Hay barn. fuel mileage is not in the design.

Tire type and pressure are important. Mud tires produce more drag than pure street tires.

Terrain makes a big difference. Hills and mountains = poor fuel mileage. Flat as Kanas = better mileage.

Long trips generally yield better fuel mileage

My rig JTRD on 39 with a 3.5 Clayton lift average 24-26mpg over my 125 miles commute each day. City, highway, stop and go. Highest seen 29, lowest 12.

And of course the TORNADO fuel atomizer.
Don't leave home without it.

I remember 30 years ago (OMG I'm getting old) they were claiming the Tornado increased MPG and HP by like 15-20% :CWL:

I was in a SoCal car club and one of the guys bought one and did dyno runs. It decreased MPG and HP by about 5-10% because it blocked more air than anything else. LOL

The tech is impressive, but build quality and design leave something to be desired. Flat panels with sharp edges just kind of line up together. No hems to protect fingers. Even the Art and Science design language at Cadillac had fenders that wrapped over to meet the hood instead of just ending at the crease. There was one in town that appeared to have panel gaps far worse than any DCX/FCA/Stellantis product I've ever owned.

If I'm spending $100,000 for a vehicle, I expect it to look better-built than a $30,000 car targeted at peasants like myself.

Not sure what owners hands need to be protected from. I’ve had my hands all over this truck and have done no damage to myself or the vehicle. This truck is built differently than any other car on the market, on purpose. Everything is VERY well through out as far as I can actually see from the example I have closely at hand and from all the ones I see in town. It’s a really popular car in my city because it makes a LOT of sense for this ecosystem. So my observations are not from casual encounters like most folks with ā€œstrongā€ opinions. They are hands on and big numbers.

And for the ā€œpeasantsā€ they have the Model 3, another technically advanced vehicle that looks a whole lot like every other car at a rather affordable price point.. šŸ‘

I would rather not worry about the jeep’s gas mileage and leave it’s look’s alone.

Yeah the picture is of an EV but OP was talking about the 2.0 gasser.
šŸ˜‚ …. Yes, he was talking about gassers…but AI created the image. AI is totally confused. šŸ˜‰

Its a body on frame vehicle with the aerodynamic properties of a brick. The only way to get better MPG is to either drive literally anything else or buy the diesel. The best I've got with my diesel Rubicon was 28 mpg. Which is pretty freakin good.
