I would have locked it into 6th and dropped my speed by about 3-4 mph. I can't stand to have the trans "hunt" like that!
My 16 year old F150 has 373 gears and (currently) 32's. It's a dinosaur, and they didn't have tow/haul modes back then, but I do lock out overdrive, and it does just fine. I had a set of 34's on it for a while, and it would often drop out of OD on the freeway whenever I'd hit a bit of an incline or strong headwind. I liked the extra inch of ground clearance off road, and low range was adequate for my purposes, but the gearing wasn't great for on-road use.
Agreed - can't stand the hunting - but I was already going about the speed limit, and we were trying to make up some time lost from a heavy rain and stopping for gas. Could have increased speed and locked it in 7th. 8th gear is all but worthless on these things.

Parts and labor will come close to $2k per axle. Also a good time to do lockers, for about $800 each, but no more labor.
lol no
Per axle?
Since you MUST do both, then it's easier to say 4K - unless you mean 2 for both???
Its 2K for both, which should be OTD pricing. You can get advertised 1500-1700 for JTs all day long before TTL.

About $2k total both axle's depending on what they want to charge you on labor. M210 and M220 gear sets (4.56) is $1k give or take for a good set. Cheapo sets are less. The about 1K for labor. If its more than $2500 you are getting taken!

Differential gears - no place to scrimp - no place for "cheap".

Ok. So without doing a regear, what tire / wheel size should I stick with?

Can you still get a meaty looking tire in a 33? And if i stick with the 33, do I use a 17" or 18" wheel? And will I need a lift kit by sticking to a 33?

37s you need to do a lot more work. gears. probably axle shafts. ball joints. big lift. maybe fenders.

If you're gonna open those axles you should consider at least 1 locker if you're gonna wheel it.

My Overland, 17" Rubicon take offs, 2.5" Clayton lift (gave me more like 3.5-4"). 35x12.5x17 Nitto Trail Grapplers.

I may get to 37s one day but it'll be after all the other work

Depends where you drive. Flats and in town you won't have any issues. Hills esp on the highway are gonna be brutal.
