So here is the update. The dealer finally looked at it and their conclusion is that the seatbelts were cut. Which makes no sense to me. They want me to pay the $1200 to get the whole thing fixed. If what they say is true- someone broke into my car and cut the belts-- wanting to do harm to me or my kids (who sit in the back). Not sure what to do to be honest- maybe file a police report?

You are right, it does not make sense at all. The whole thing if you step back and look at it logically, you are an example of one. If a running defect, others would have reported it also. From a accidental viewpoint, having both cut does not make sense either.

That leaves external causes that are unknown of who and why?

Not saying this is what happened to you BUT........ If it were my truck and my kids back when they were 3-7 years I'd be looking squarely at my middle daughter. That little princess had a thing for scissors or anything else sharp. She'd cut her hair, clothes, bed sheets, stuffed animals. You had to watch her constantly. Scissors were banned in our house for years!

Yeah- my 6 year old really isn’t like that. She likes cutting paper but that’s about it. The other problem is that I rarely drive the jeep and my kids ride in it even less. There also aren’t sharp scissors sitting around either. Either a stranger got into the car and cut both belts or it’s some defect.
I’m tempted to do some forensic work and see what the belt looks like under a microscope. I’m assuming that a belt that is cut must have different fiber breaks than one that rips? Too bad I’m not an fbi lab tech

I also feel like dealers quote of $1400 to fix this is bs. Im going to ask my regular mechanic.

Should be pretty easy to experiment with different types of cutting tools to narrow things down. A cut from Scissors would leave a different mark than say a steak knife

It's about $300 to replace all the rear seat belts ($450 retail). I would love to know where they get $1200 from.

How about the middle seat belt? Is that one fine? If this was intentional you would think they would have cut that one too.

Other avenue of investigation would be rats or other rodents although it’s unclear how they could have made it there.

That's a lot of labor for 6 bolts and a couple of pieces of trim to remove and replace.

I texted my normal mechanic. He said $700 (parts + labor). Needless to say I wont be having the dealer do this. I'm also going to send a letter to Christian Meunier- who is listed as the Jeep North American CEO.

That's more like it. $500 in parts and a couple hours of labor in total.
