Update: maiden voyage this past weekend after adding a cargo tray, tongue box, and some more support and stiffners to carry the boxes, rack, and tent without flexion. How's very well, fits within the Gladiators track width. It survived a 500 mile round trip without issue. I already have ideas for improvements, as to what it needs for more efficient setup and breakdown of camp. Work in progress, but for now, it's ready to go at anytime on another adventure. Hopefully, next year's Easter Jeep Safari, from coastal Virginia to Moab and back!

Inspired by ATEM OFFROAD on YT

This build started life as a Lowes Carry-On 4'x5'x16" utility trailer with 12" wheels.

It now has the axle flip with 5x4.5 to 5x5 3" hub adapters and 22 JTR wheels with factory 53k mile Falken MTs. In addition the Amazon universal midsize bed rack, Smittybilt Overland XL gen2, and San Him shower tent.

Things left to do:
1. Electric setup
2. Close in the bed space between the rack and sidewalls and build a drawer system
3. Extend the tongue by several feet with 6 to 8ft piece of 2"x3"x.180 wall rectangular tubing
4. Water system
5. MaxTrax, pioneering tools, fuel carriers
6. Spare tire mount
7. Bike hitch mount
8. Maybe a small cargo basket
9. Tongue box
10. Fenders M416 style for flat work area
11. Turn the rear lift out gate into an actual tailgate with usable work area
12. Mount the trailer jacks
13. Potentially swap tires for matching 37s with the JTRD

I like those setups. I won't do something like that, when I travel I need more comfort. I need an RV Travel Trailer. But if I was thinking of doing a rooftop tent I would want it mounted to a trailer instead of on the vehicle I was driving. It seems way more practical to be able to set up camp, then go off driving, and come back to camp later and not have to break camp every time I am going off driving a trail.

That was the whole idea of building this one. I have a half height annex that gives me a enclosed room. I have 20 gal of water and a on demand hot water heater for showers. Bonus it is under 1000# loaded.

Finally got around to finishing my build…kinda. Let’s be honest…are we ever really done!? Thanks to this thread, I’m sure I’ll be adding a thing or 3.

Added the wood floor and walls, as I still use it as a utility trailer. My buddy finished my fenders just in time for our trip to Iowa. Had to wire in some new clearance lights as I’m an 1” over the width.

Ignore the extra light the rear. Forgot to remove it after the mock up.

Looking sweet! This is one I put together. Started life as a 1972 Shasta, which pretty much donated the axel and channel. Works well, I run an articulating hitch. Its quiet and very agile. I built it to accept my fishbone offroad mid height rack. If we want to take just the truck and tent, I just take the tractor and pick the rack and tent off and set it on the truck.

Damn these all look like a much better idea than a rack and tent which was my original plan I scrapped because I don’t want to carry all that stuff with me all the time.

I did the rack and tent thing for a bit but for my casual use it was too much of a pain. Didn't want it on the truck all the time.

We discuss building a trailer often - I think it would work well for us.

We camped next to a guy at the NASCAR race that actually had a similar build to these. It worked really well for him it seemed.
