Relatively new owner and I'm considering a fall trip to the outer banks. I'm looking at a home rental that is only accessible by driving on the beach. I've used 4wd in snow and on mountains but never on the beach and sand. Any advice or things I should prep for? I have a 2022 overland with track lock and currently running Falken wildpeak mt from a rubicon, but I can swap back to the Overland stock tires if the mud tires wouldn't perform well in the sand.

I've stayed out in Corova the last several years. Going north your on the shore side, easy. Going south you will be dune side which can be soft and rutted up pretty good.

Once I pull off from the hard road, I put mine in 4HI and go. Airing down is recommended, but not necessary. Just be aware or take caution while stopping in the soft sand. If you stop to get your toes wet of take pictures, just use some throttle modulation..... Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Most get stuck by just stabbing the throttle and dig in.

Have a quality snatch strap/rope, shovel at a minimum; recovery board are really nice if you're rolling solo.

Airing down is your best friend on sand. Yes, you can get away without doing it, but it makes the ride so much better. 15 years in 4 different Jeeps and have never got stuck. The lower you go, the more you feel like your floating. Always, have a shovel and a jack board with you.

It looks like you drive a high altitude or a Jeep with street tires? Hard to tell from your thumbnail photo.
Airing down will help. Floor mats work great in a pinch for traction boards, I like yankem ropes to keep just in case…… but have never used it for our Jeep in the sand….
4high, don’t stop in soft sand…., air down a bit- 18psi is good unless it’s really soft stuff… ?

If there is any chance of soft sand driving, air down. You'll be glad you did. You want your tire to be wider so it floats over top of the sand, rather than digging in. Airing down will get you that wider and longer footprint that is need to keep you from digging.

Generally 4hi is your best bet. Sometimes 4lo can apply to much torque too quickly and end up acting as a shovel, digging you deeper.

If you're really unsure, stay close to the water if that is an option.

Take your jeep out to the Pine Barrens sometime and test it. There is some good sandy places there. You'll have an absolute blast!

Just there this past weekend and was our first time on sand, nothing to it. Running 285 Wildpeak AT3, lowered pressure to about 18psi, and 4hi. Areas there at the Currituck Lighthouse to air up & down. This time of year you can also hit the sand at Kitty Hawk, Nags Head and Hatteras.

Nothing better than learning from the Australians. They are experts with sand beach driving and recovery

I was just out there 2 weeks ago, right as the hurricane was hitting Florida. You 'll need a beach driving permit, just FYI. I dropped pressure to 20 and had no problems other than the fish not biting.
Bummer on the fishing trip, all the reason to go back and try again. We stayed parked for a couple hours, a few folks fishing in the area, only thing they were catching was a buzz. No permit required to drive on Corolla beach. The others, a permit required about April through first Saturday in October, no permit October through April. Cape Hatteras is said to require drivers to watch a short video before driving onto the beach. Anyhow, folks should do their own homework before going to any of said beaches.

Depending on what company you rent with the beach passes might be included; ours was this year. Call and check, save the $50 for beer lol

All good comments. I actually have not taken the Jeep on the beach yet but years in many other vehicles. One thing about these newer vehicles in sand is Traction control can get you in trouble so make sure all the nannies are turned off. On my Ram you had to hold the traction control button to completely eliminate it while in 4hi.

Here's the best piece of advice that I left off. Wash your Jeep down when you're finished, and also put a sprinkler underneath to rinse the saltwater off the undercarriage.
