Looking ahead to servicing the automatic (fluid and filter). Jeep says it has lifetime fluid and filter but I don't treat my auto's like that. However, the parts for the job run around $600 which I can deal with but was wondering if anyone else has changed their fluid.
If so, how did it look? At what mileage did you change it?
If not, do you plan to?

Whomever thought it was a good idea to delete dipsticks on autos should be flogged with one.

I might do mine around the 50,000 or 75,000 mile mark. Haven't decided yet.

I was thinking 70k since that is what is recommended by ZF, the manufacturer.

$600 is a bit steep. If you shop around, you can do it for under $200 in parts. Just need 7 quarts of the ZF spec fluid and the filter. Pan gasket is reusable.

Was my understanding that the filter is built into the pan plus the high cost of fluid. Makes this one expensive service.

Jeep Gladiator Transmission service anyone? A430B91C-4FFE-4218-A918-9EF6FF679CE0

I was researching this maintenance item myself. I have 80K miles and starting to notice some gear slippage going from 2nd to 3rd and then from 3rd to 4th. It only seems to “slip” once in the morning getting up to speed when the fluid temp is low. Once the transmission fluid is warm it shifts smooth thru those gears as expected.

My first step going down the diagnostic path was to change the fluid and filter.

How many quarts for the job? I read something like 8-9qts dry. At about $45/qt x 8qts = $360. Obviously it won’t be dry because the bypass valve for the transmission inter cooler is closed and by the time the transmission is warm enough to open that valve you missed your window for checking the fluid level.

So again about how many quarts for a drop the pan and then change the the fluid/filter and go thru the procedure to check the level?

7 quarts/liters will cover it. With the vehicle sitting overnight cold, and removing the fill/check plug, about 2.5 quarts will drain out, this is what drains back from the torque converter. There is another approx. 4 quarts remaining in the pan that sits below the fill/check plug that will exit when the pan is dropped.

You might look at the multiple threads asking these exact same questions - there are multi-page threads on how to do it, OPINIONS on when to do it, and more.

Some of the attachments above are for a 8HP50 not the 8HP75 behind the Diesel.
