I just found an update saying that apparently this happened a long time ago and someone just reported it on the 7th. So the NFS just heard about it and closed the trail to go recover. No other news so I assume whomever it was got out and left and never went back for their jeep. Based on that 2nd photo it sounds odd to me that no one saw it or reported it sooner, but that was the update. Hopefully everyone is ok. Guessing the NFS will find the owner from the VIN.
How do you fall off Schnebly? I never felt any chance I would come close to an edge.

Headed for the hills to splash in some cool water. Our dog loved it.

Found some fish in another pool, that's about 18 inches deep.

Went to Uwharrie for the first (and last) time. That was just not my jam. It was really difficult to figure out which trail was which and we ended up on some moderate trails and I scrapped the shit out of my rock sliders (they did their job) but didn't damage anything else except for my poor 9 year old daughters psyche. She was having a meltdown. The wheelbase on the Gladiator was just too long for the bumps, or I just don't know what the fuck I'm doing (entirely possible).

I wish I could find some trails that were just dirt roads that led to something meaningful. That's what we are looking for. Drive to the top of the trail to see some lake or mountain views. I'm sure they are out there, but the family is damaged from the experience, so I don't think it's ever going to happen. We have all resolved to just keep it on the sand. That's an experience that everyone enjoys.

I take it that you didn't have anyone else with you. Plenty that you can do there in a Gladiator, a bunch that you probably shouldn't.

I wouldn't give up on it yet but go with a group that can teach you and understands your concerns.

You are correct. We did some research, read some maps and thought we had a plan. It was confusing once we got in there so I asked this group in the trailhead parking lot. We were next to the Lakeview Trail (I think that's right, it was a new one). He said that it was an easy trail that you can get a Honda Civic through. I think that was a complete fabrication. We made it through that okay, it wasn't too bad, but when we crossed over the service road, shit got real.

Honestly, I would love to give it another shot on some easy trails, but there is no way that my wife is going again. My daughter might never get in the truck again. :D I think that Fort Fisher is more our jam as a family. I also have reservations about breaking my truck in the middle of nowhere too. Meh. We'll see. For now, that experiment is over.

Lakeview IS one of the easy ones. I did it in my 2017 WK2 Trailhawk in OR1. There is nothing on the main trail that a stock Gladiator should have even come close to rubbing it's belly. There are 3 small playgrounds, 1 is Gladiator friendly for a novice, one is more challenging and the third I can't get up in in my built JK.

You came in from Art Lilly campground and crossed over on to Wolf Den. That is a bit more challenging, again, not hard and you can rub your belly there. I'll bet you missed the turn to stay on Wolf Den and ended up on Dutch John. I could see you having some moments on it. If you want to try it again some weekend without the family, let me know. I'm 90 minutes from there and go frequently. I might even bring the Gladiator instead of the JK.

Yes, you are correct. We came in from Art Lilly, took the Lakeview trail, which wasn't too bad. My memory is fuzzy, but I don't recall that being too challenging, but certainly not something a Civic could handle. We then crossed over Wolf Den, but I see where Dutch John goes off to the right, we stayed to the left and got to a spot with a big boulder. We turned around there after asking the same guy from the lot which way was the fastest way back to the service road. He said go back, so we did, but it looks like from the map we could have gone forward and gotten out faster.

I'll keep that offer in mind. We have a busy couple of months ahead of us, so it might be a while before I get a chance to go again.

Reminds me back when I first got my tune and was feeling froggy. Was also around the time 392XR Wranglers came out. Flagged one down on the expressway to race him from a stop.
Yeah he ate me up, lol.

Just wrapped up a 1800+ mile trip to get kid #2 from summer long wilderness camp to his first year of college. The truck is perfectly sized for the task but after the 4th 8 hour day on roads in the north east I kinda wish I was in another vehicle. Curious what others have done to make long distance driving more comfortable. We did make the best of it with some gravel road excursions in the Green Mountains plus some doorless drives with family by the Susquehanna. It still was a lot of seat time.
