I read this morning on bookface a post from some weather reporter. He stated he talked to one of the truck drivers that was stranded, and the driver wasn't shutting his truck off for fear it wouldn't start again because it's 20 degrees out. And to pray for all the folks stranded in these freezing temps.

Say what? 😳

Even on winter diesel a truck should have zero issues starting in 20 deg. If it does, then you have larger issues and probably shouldn't be driving it over-the-road.

And freezing temps? We spend 10 hrs sitting on a bucket on the ice in 20 degrees. Put a jacket on lol.

And then theres the tire argument, "our tires don't do good on ice or snow!"... YOU GET THE SAME TIRE OPTIONS AS I DO! Order an all-season with good winter performance!

I think for me it's just the lack of preparation in the south. You (not you specifically, general statement) see the weather reports, you know it's coming, yet you still don't put emergency kits in your vehicles, you don't bring warm clothes, and then you act shocked when you get stuck somewhere.
I think as a whole, the population is generally dumb in regard to being prepared. I don't think it's isolated to the south in the winter time - though our dumbness does show up at that point.

It was 17* this morning. I think the wind chill put it in the single digits. I drove to work no problem and so did the ole lady. (I'm on the north side of Lake Ponchartrain, across from New Orleans). We put some additional insulation around our well pump and contactors along with a heat lamp. Put on an extra jacket, easy day. Everyone is at work that I can see.

Now, up in north Louisiana along the I-20 corridor, there was a legitimate ice problem and trees were collapsing across the highways from ice load - so that's a hard one to prep for. Along with some buildings, carports, and gas station awnings collapsing under ice load (which is substantially heavier than fluffy snow).

No excuse for not having a blanket or a snack in the car, though.

That being said, we get people down here that panic over tropical storms and hurricanes that aren't familiar and we just lean back like 'Yea fam, this is nothing new'.

So, I guess every part of the country has that thing they handle like it's nothing, and that thing that 'never' happens and they look stupid when it does 🤣

I did some looking and so far, the only stranded folks are on I-20 near Ruston. Evidently, there is a section of interstate fully encased in ice that the semis can't climb, so that's jammed everyone up.

Based on what I've seen in the area, I'd guess there is 1/2" solid ice sheet on the road there, so unless you dump enough sand there to build a beach, all those company trucks with no power dividers and no locking diffs aren't climbing anything until they scrap it clean with a grader or let it thaw 🤣

Speaking on Louisiana...

Today, in MN, I drove my truck to work... in 10 degrees... and on icy roads... and I didn't die!!

HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?!

In all seriousness, I get that the south doesn't regularly see winter conditions, but it DOES happen every year, and every year no one is prepared and it's the end of the world. It just makes me chuckle.
You don’t have to be from the south to experience that…… Up here in southern PA….
Same thing.

It’s too much work to prepare…..and they wouldn’t even know how - what’s that mean?? 🙄 …They’ll manage to get to the grocery store and stock up on everything they should’ve already had. 😁 No day-to-day preparedness.

My wife thinks I’m crazy for buying the commercial rolls of TP off Amazon. Those big ones like in the grocery store. $60 and I have TP for a year.

Appreciate you buying them, instead of taking them from said grocery store.

Responded Sunday to a Wrangler and Bronco that got stuck in deep snow on one of the year-round trails Saturday. Both drivers walked out of the trail and got home safely Saturday night.

Rolled out of the house at 08:45 and got off the trail at 16:00 and back in the front door at 18:00 or so. We got the two vehicles out of there; they were originally unstuck fairly quickly. The rest of it was getting the Bronco unstuck again when we decided to first try going forward to complete the trail. Decided to turn everyone around and go back to the start of the trail about a kilometre back. Then getting one of the rescue vehicles (an '99 Cherokee) unstuck after it got into a ditch turning around. The rest was winching almost every other truck up a long, steep hill. (The stuck Bronco lost 4wd and the Wrangler was a sport with open difs and bad tires). Everyone got out safely and uninjured, and I was reminded again that my first build in the spring is installing my winch. Did I mention it was -18ºC?

The first picture is the two stuck trucks. The rest are parts of the rescue.
