I am thinking of using DEF additives preventing cristalization, but I am not sure ...

Is there any evidence that these “premium” DEF products actually are any better for the SCR or DEF injectors? I’ve yet to see anything independent…and the SDS are exactly the same as any other ISO DEF product.
Yes, there is evidence both from the SAE case studies as well everyday people who run the additivized DEF.

I’m not interested in the personal tales, but can you link me the case study?

lol… won’t trust personal tales on a forum designed for such… but instead of googling asks for a link.

Pulled this off another forum. Post #15.

https://sprinter-source.com/forums/index.php?threads/98977/

Update: I contacted technical support at Old World Industries LLC. I asked the following questions:

1) How to determine the expiration code on the BlueDef Platinum box? Tech Support asked where did I purchase it? He later stated where you purchase may change the date code format??? The first two numbers in the code, in my case 12 indicates where it was manufactured. 12 indicates Texas. The next two numbers indicate the year of manufacture, but you have to subtract 1 from the 2 numbers numbers printed on the box. In my case the number 22 subtracting 1 gives the manufacture year as 2021. The next 3 numbers represent days remaining in the year. In my case 340. Therefore 365-340=15. My container with the string of numbers 12-22-340 (no dashes on the box)... represents TX manufacture-2021 manufacturer year-January 15 production date. Which is good for up to 18 months from the manufacture date, but only if stored properly. BlueDef container states up to 2 years shelf life.

2) How does BlueDef Platinum quantify the amount of deposit reduction obtained by the use of BlueDef platinum? Tech support's answer was we don't. He stated "the Platinum undergoes additional refinement;" the purity of the BlueDef Platinum is greater; it is more pure than the BlueDef non platinum even though "the BlueDef is a great product". The purer the product the less deposits build up. As an after thought he mentioned the additives package, but that was proprietary information. Note: Both fluids are manufactured under the same standards ISO 22241. This alone makes me think it could be possible Old World Industries LLC / PEAK could legally sell the regular BlueDef as BlueDef Platinum. No test data proving how well the platinum works or explanation of how the additives package works reminds me of a comment I previously read on this forum...If there ain't any pictures (or in this case test data)...it didn't happen! I'm left wondering whether the "additional processing" is whatever was left in the tank until first thing Monday morning, there's Platinum baby!

I encourage others to contact the manufacturer at this number to inquire how they quantify the improvements 1-800-323-5440 tech support option. It would be interesting the hear whether the response changes.

I think personal testimonies are just as important since these are real-world scenarios. By ignoring those, you are missing out.

Thank you. I am really interested in that Jstor paper, too bad it has a paywall since it looks helpful. Conceptual I guess, but better than nothing. Tough call on what’s actually in the Platinum DEF and if it’s worth the extra cost.
We know the conclusion of the study: “This study has shown that the use of dedicated additives in DEF was an effective solution to significantly reduce urea related deposit formation below 200*C which could help OEMs to optimize SCR systems for cold and/or urban operating conditions.”

We've had several people over the years test Platinum by pulling their DEF injector on a routine basis to check for deposits. Those who do a lot of short commutes are the most interested in the matter, and they have all seen a dramatic difference.

I switched from Platinum to Traveller Premium because it's $6.71 cheaper per 2.5-gallon jug. I now have three trucks that use DEF, so I suspect that my DEF consumption will increase. But let's say that I continue averaging a minimum of 10 jugs per year, that still comes out to $67 dollars per year in cost savings.

2021 Total gallons of DEF: 25 gallons (2.08 gallons per month)
2022 Total gallons of DEF: 25 gallons (2.08 gallons per month)
2023 Total gallons of DEF: 27.5 gallons (2.29 gallons per month)

Here's Traveller's marketing information:

Traveller Premium DEF is meticulously crafted to enhance engine performance while reducing harmful emissions. Powered by the anti-crystallization technology from Bardahl, our premium DEF will help your engine maintain optimal fuel efficiency. Come rain or shine, this formula will eliminate and prevent deposits in your SCR system, saving your hard-earned money on costly repairs. Experience the pinnacle of clean diesel technology with our premium DEF - the ultimate choice for discerning drivers committed to both performance and sustainability. Our Premium DEF is compatible with all Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems.

I buy the Platinum from Menards where they sell a lot so it's fresh. Wasn't sure but read studies that said it was worth the expense if you look long run. A friend has a Duramax with about 200k on it, always bought the cheap stuff and is now having big DEF system problems. I'll take the chance on spending a little more now may save me down the road. The whole DEF thing is just another wonderful thing our government has given us...:(
