Just curious- DEF or Platinum DEF usually used?

I use platinum because it says it doesn’t crystallize…. Pretty sure I’m just over paying for DEF…. ??‍♂

What did you, or do you use?

I'm switching over to Platinum on my next fill because of the crystallizing and winter is coming.

I usually use the blue but I did stop at a truck stop and put in straight from the nozzle on a recent trip. The issue was the heater in the tank and the fuse box… I didn’t know about the platinum.

Kevlarr, Just a FYI. Had similar warranty repair work done at 3900 mi. Now at 5,500 mi with no issues. Have kept an eye on def level to see that it is in fact using fluid. Down to 3/4 Def tank level.
So far so good.

I have a Duramax and the DEF seems to be the only thing that fails. I have used Blue DEF for the most part. I recently, about 10k miles ago, installed a China DEF heater pump assembly. I also started using the cheapest DEF I can find. I think the failure is letting the DEF level get low. Keeping it topped off will help with the crystallization problem.. This is sort of a test. When it fails again, I will go back to OEM parts and quality DEF, and try keeping the tank full. Definitely not a Jeep issue, just a concept flaw.

Hopefully all is good for ya moving forward. 30k miles a so far I'm trouble free with this particular issue. My last few def fill-ups has been with Tractor Supply branded DEF.

How far down are you guys letting the tank get, before refilling? Half tank, almost empty?

I been refilling at half tank. Where I can put the whole 2.5 gal jug in.

I used to work at a place in Reno. Almost all def is made there using the same formula. Doesn't matter platinum or regular. Highline Aftermarket. They put it in the container and put it in different boxes. Whether labeled for O'Reilly, Auto zone, Walmart, Napa, or anyone else. Also same goes for windshield washer fluid. Yeah for that stuff there are certain types of formulas. But still boxed for different vendors all using the same formula. They also make Rain-X
I don't have any experience with Carson City Jeep except they wouldn't deal on price. I've taken mine to lithia here in Reno for any of my recalls, warranty issues, and oil changes. Nothing but good things to say about them. No def issues in almost 2 years. Never had a problem. Always just buy the O'Reilly or Costco one. Although it doesn't matter.

Once I learned (per the manual) that topping it off is part of the scheduled maintenance I've tried to keep it above half ever since. I flip-flop between premium and standard. When I forget what I used last, I default to premium. Some folks have conducted tests on standard vs premium and found premium does crystalize less. Nothing scientific but the premium runs about $4 more per jug, I'm over 40k miles in with no issues. Mine isn't, but even if it was a DEF hog and it required a full tank every 3500 miles, I would have spent $45 additional on premium if I ran it full-time. I hadn't done the math before but now seeing how minimal it is, I'll likely run it full-time for continued peace of mind. At least until it fails anyhow hah.

Warranty took care of two def heaters. A frozen tank at 14f took out the third. I'd like to test both on their freezing points and not just trust the label on the bottle. The third failure was also a bad heater.

I would have loved to bought a diesel Gladiator, but as you can see how the Duramax destroyed my confidence with diesel emissions. Duramax has a version of the Bosch CP4 too. Glad I have the 3.6L.

I had a 2016 Dodge Cummins and I had issues with the DEF system. Mostly when I would get the dreaded limp mode in 150 miles countdown if I topped off the tank and ran it on a washboard dirt road then turned it off and on a few times it would disappear ?. The dealership didn’t even blink they just fixed it and that was that. Hopefully I can get them to pay for the plane ticket to Reno and Uber rides to and from the airport. I still love the diesel and maybe when we retire to Washington State I can take the damn DEF system off and throw it away. I’m also thinking about having the dealership here add a heater block so I can plug it in when we’re up at the cabin in the winter. Couldn’t hurt right? Thanks for all of the input guys! Appreciate it all!
