My Gladiator is behind my gun and ammo collection ? but when me and the wife shoot every weekend it's a good hobby to pick up I think we shoot more rounds off on a weekend than we both put miles on our jeeps in a month ? ?

Just go on Pirate4x4 and pursue the classifieds for a Jeep on tons or the parts section. And then chop them out add new brackets and part the rest.

But for me anything besides unmaintained roads or the beach I would rather buy something I could tow with the JT. I’m tired of wheeling a DD and one of these on 40s is only as capable as something with a shorter wheelbase on 35s (for New England trails) in my experience. I would love to go with a 22re crawler on yota axles with ORIs or a YJ. Something I can roll over but back on the trailer and not care.
This 100%

Another option, buy a second jeep instead of axles. You can pick up a decently modded TJ in good shape for the $20K many people mention.

Building your own set of D60's is not difficult. You do need some specific tooling or a good friend that has what is needed. You can spend evenings and weekends with other Jeeper's building and having a few beers along the way.

My buddy had to be that guy wit 37" tires and a 6" lift plus body lift on his 2005 TJ. I built mine with a 3" kit and 33" tires. He could not do most of the trails in western MA with his. Mine, no problem! He sold the turbo off his jeep , sold the doors and a few other parts...... I now am modifying his frame and using his 4.0 and 6speed to upgrade my old 99 4 banger from its rusted frame and body lol!

As another poster mentioned, you don’t need 60s to run 40s… As long as you aren’t one of those skinny pedal = skill people.

I’m doing 1-2 times a month off-roading red/black trails with 40s on my stock 44s. I upgraded the axles of course, but they are doing great.

37s are also very solid options and light 37s will help the truck feel stock on the road. I ran them for a year and if this was my daily would have stayed with them.

$6k is on the lower end nowadays. It’s hard to justify spending that kind of cash on a a bicycle when my KTM 690 Enduro cost just a little more and will do 100mph.
Thats easy, i dont have anywhere to ride a dirt bike. The closest trails are 2 hours away and even then, they have jeep trails and id rather do those. Also, my wife says no to another street motorcycle lol.

Im sure i could illegally, but thats not my cup of tea. It pisses me off when im helping rebuild a mt bike trail bc dirt bikes screw them up. All trails around me are no dirt bikes nor equestrian, yet we are fixing them often bc people who dont help with the trails, dgaf, and use them anyway.

Ive been out of the mt bike scene about four years now (had a kid and just havent started back yet). 6k for a mt bike in this area is overkill. I could probably do a full carbon hardtail cheaper and still be fine in my area. As ive gotten older, i just prefer a FS. Santa Cruz Stigmata i want as a gravel grinder.

Similar situation…. Super into downhill growing up and cross country for fun… back in 2005~ race bikes were $5k and I’m talking flagship…. Now it’s like entry-midline is 5k race bikes are 10-12k!?!?!

find it interesting that you are in an area that doesn’t allow horses… I’m not a fan of riding through crap…. But seems like they are allowed everywhere in most states I have been too.
What state/area are you in?

LOL, I bet 75% of the people on 40's:
Haven't even re-geared much less changed the axles
Have never done anything Jeep-like with their Jeep
Have a debt to income ratio that would give you the vapors

People buy sports all the time and strap on 37's without a re-gear which fits their use case fine. Lots of shitty dealers take a Sport with (3.55's?) and hang all kind of trinkets on them without modifying the base vehicle to accommodate them.

This is the a site that lists all our local trails. Im on the GA/SC border. Augusta, GA, home of The Masters.

edit: and now that you mention it, i think mistletoe state park allows horses, but ive never ridden out there tbh.

nothing is cheap thats for sure , but also the kind of mods you wanna do is defintely on the high level . going into the big guys world. those are serious mods leading to a whole another level. you wont play in the same league as i do with a 3.5 inch lift and hoping for 37's ;-)

but 2 big advantages even if its a loooot of money ....

1) its gonna be super awesome
2) its still less expansive than owning a bimbo with at least 2000cc's airbags on each side.... and you willys wont never bothering you for some shits like Chanel, Lous Vuitton or Louboutin ;-)

anyway , good luck in your project and cant wait to see the result

Here is an article describing the difference between Dana 44s vs 60s. One thing not mentioned is that you will need to buy bigger brakes with the Dana 60s. I agree with other posts that you are better off staying with the Dana 44s and going with 37 inch tires. Unless you plan on turning your rig into only an off road machine, then upgrade to the 60s.

Thank you!! This was useful. And I think I’m changing my mind a bit.

Some pay cash, some use plastic and some finance them. It’s wild to think someone would spend that kind of coin on axles but then again I’ve got other expensive hobbies.
Marriage and Children are my hobbies, well worth it though. I saw the $8k price tag per axle and thought the same thing, who would do that.

It's one of life's choices. Do what you want. Follow your dream or someone else's, it's still your choice.

Divorced, both kids grown (in college). You are definitely right in that it is a choice.

Being that my house is now empty most of the time except for the dog and I, I can have expensive hobbies. I work from home so no 'daily drive', so I buy lifestyle vehicles and mod them and have fun. Last vehicle was a 'lightly' modded '19 Dodge Challenger, I got tired of only going fast in a straight line all the time, so I traded that and now I'm building a go anywhere Jeep.

Everyone has different budgets, time, ability, and/or at a different stage in their life. I couldn't have done any of the builds I've done during my 20's or 30's, I didn't have the budget or time.

It wasn't until I hit 40 that my budget allowed it and now that my youngest is in college, my time allows it more and more, and ability can be learned or taught, it's a direct result of education and experience.
