Older Comanche.
I wish I had my 87 Comanche - it was a "Sportruck" short box 4x4 with running boards, light bar, etc. and 5 speed.

There is a L O T of good to be had in a twin turbocharged V8 in an SUV. The only thing I really miss from my prior ride is the absolutely effortless acceleration at any given speed. There was no work to squeeze almost 600hp out.

Having recently taken a ride in a JL 392 I’m looking forward to a trip to Rubitrux in the future for some hoonigan level power. ?

But I do agree Jeep ain’t going to do it unless CA, VA, and the EU have a massive overhaul to inject some reality.

Next decade will be an automotive brand purge, with the EV technology and laws moving so rapidly many just won’t make it. My guess is whatever power plant we will see in the new Dakota will be the way Jeep goes. Heck they might just kill JT so it doesn’t compete with another mid size tuck in their lineup.

I'm with the majority here---despite wishing for more stock power like the 392 it just isn't in the cards.

So yesterday, on New Years day, I put in the AWE Tread Dual Exhaust. Didn't increase power---but it sure as hell sounds like I have power to spare

Why would they bring the Dakota back? There hasn't even been talks about doing it

Where you been. There has been talk about it. Based on the Gladiator frame. It may have either a ifs or a solid front axle. Time frame '24 roughly.

I have been listening to people saying it won't happen anytime soon as Stelantus doesn't have the money with the whole engine redesign they are doing with the v8 swaps

I've talked about all of the testing, certifications and such that vehicle go through for meeting "standards" and how just thinking about a different engine throws huge monkey wrenches into the mix. I've found a great example.
The engine's COOLING FAN has to be described and specified and the EPA has to be given data on all of this because it's part of a vehicle's evaporative emissions certification.

If they so much as change the fan, fan position, air flow and other factors, they must go trough testing and certification processes again.

They must certify/promise there are no defeat devices and no alternate tunes in or on any vehicle. And cost? Wow, it's crazy.

Here we go -

Jeep Gladiator 2024/2025 JT+JL V6 Hurricane / 4xe / 392 1672722221588

Jeep Gladiator 2024/2025 JT+JL V6 Hurricane / 4xe / 392 1672722348429

Jeep Gladiator 2024/2025 JT+JL V6 Hurricane / 4xe / 392 1672722654650

BTW - this part is CARB and these fees - State of California -
CA gets their own money from FCA and things must be certified. I assume the carry-over is for "no change" types of things where the 2023 model year hasn't changed anyway.

Still think "why don't they just drop xyz engine in it, it will fit" ?

And if they bring back the Dakota what is the point , they got rid of it for a reason . Further why would they take sales away from the gladiator if it's the same frame...that is a stupid decision. Just improve on the gladiator

It's the brand separation. Not everyone is willing to buy a Jeep, or knows that they are made by Chrysler. GMC rolled the same trucks out of the factory for decades under two different brand names, each of which had die-hard followers.

Educational reminder in link below. Yes we are still awaiting a due date and yes there is always a chance these JTs could be a short run like the 04-06 Unlimited two door. The I6 below is as short as some 4 cyl.

Stellantis Media - Stellantis Debuts Hurricane Twin-turbo I-6 Engine That Cuts Emissions, Increases Fuel Economy And Is More Powerful (stellantisnorthamerica.com)
Hmmm I have one of them 05 Unlimited's about 25 ft away right now it would be crazy to think I'd get 3 strikes in a row 91 MJ, 05 "LJ" then a 2020 JT.

Older Comanche.
Damn I need to get my MJ back in shape.

The Dodge Dakota was the final nail in the Comanche's coffin in 91 from my reading and told by a few around the Jeep world. When I ordered mine it was supposedly of the last batch off the assembly line. If I had not ordered as a 91 it would have been titled as a 92.

I love me a straight 6 so much. Naturally balanced, easy to work around. Smooth power. I really hope this Hurricane turns out to be the modern day 2jz.

I can hope.

The gladiator is based on the RAM 1500 frame so it may be a little large for a new dakota. My theory is that if Stellantis wants to put out a new Dakota it will be a competitor to the new crop of light duties like the Maverick and could be unibody cross over based.

As much as enthusiasts appreciate the body on frame platforms, the majority of vehicle buyers don't know the technical difference but do recognize the handling and ride trade-offs. How many Bronco Sport customers think they are getting a cheaper "Big Bronco" without realizing there are major differences in design?

The JT lives because Jeep has carefully cultivated a robust enthusiast market over the years that is sizable enough to warrant production of what is really a niche vehicle. Other than as a lifestyle accessory, trading off traditional pickup qualities to incorporate Jeep off road capability resulted in a vehicle that works very well for a certain user but doesn't necessarily make sense practically speaking for a large population of drivers.

I want to get an older Jeep with a blown engine and build this 401 I have here and drop in it. Leave the JT for good, hammer on the other one.
Honcho? I used to love these..........aah, who am I kidding, I still do. In my High school days I used to wash and prep cars at a Jeep dealership. It was a great job for a teenager who loved Jeeps. I got to drive all the new Jeeps. The shop truck was one of these Honchos and I did part deliveries once in a while. Wait a minute, I just dated myself, didn't I?
