Something tells me they’re chasing CAFE numbers more than anything else, so don’t be surprised. It’s kind of hard to keep the customer happy, develop new technologies, fight government regulation forcing what could be seen as unrealistic standards, at least in scale with these time constraints, during a time of supply chain recovery with inflationary pressures and customer push back on price increases and bean counters attempting to increase profits.

I don’t know if that’s a run on sentence or not, but it made sense to me.

That was like the cliff notes on a book about the auto industry in 2024

My son has for years rolled his own computers, but started comparing the prices of decent parts compared to a good turnkey system - you can buy one cheaper than the parts.
He went online and looked up the parts and pieces of my latest desktop system and said that it would cost another 300+ to build this same system with the same system board, video, RAM, SD drive and so on.

I'm pretty happy with my Lenovo laptop as it is....... so far, no need to make any changes.

The Hurricane engine has to be a tech nightmare - if things don't operate exactly as planned, watch out.
There's a cool factor to it - an I6 with that much power and torque, but to get there, it's got to be operating on the bleeding edge.
I love the thought - I've been an I6 person for a lot of years, and love it when people get crazy numbers from say a 258 or 4.0, but...........

For sure! My buddy asked me about a pre-built PC the other day and I said well it looks fine and I can't build it for that cheap...

I like the experience though. Putting one together and seeing it work.

I'm the same. New tech is fun! But daunting as well. It's a tight rope to walk.

I was speaking with a gentleman who is very familiar with the 3.0L Hurricane engine. He pointed out some serious shortcomings of the engine that one should be aware of before buying a vehicle with that engine, i) the engine is ALL aluminum, the bores are hard chrome plated, there is no steel liner so even a minor overheating event will trash the engine (aka Honda motocross bikes of years ago, ii) to do many normal maintenance items the cab has to come off, iii) you will not like where the engine rolls on HP and torque. We talked for an hour about the engine but these are some of the takeaways

I enjoyed it more years ago - then I retired from government IT and decided I didn't miss it so much, so haven't bothered keeping up at all.
Ironically, the guy who got me started with computers (and building them in the time of the original IBM PC) - my ex-brother-in-law, is in a similar situation according to my son - Dave no longer keeps up with tech. He wrote some of the first modem software, software for automated fuel pumps (pay at the pump) and trade tracking software in the 80s as well as building PCs and was totally amazing. Now he asks my son for advice.

i) all alloy, good.The platform needs to go on a diet in order to get the hybrid tech and still have a usable load rating.
ii) not new in current era. Last of defenders (puma engine/classic looks) was body off for anything serious mechanically. And boy did it have a lot of body off issues..
iii) why exactly won’t I like the way it makes torque? You mean I’ll like it less than the 3.6 does not make torque? Or is there some other reason why I won’t like the way it makes a heap more torque at half the revs? I’m intrigued to read about it. Go ahead and fill me in.

The truth is actually the opposite. It’s actually about a home grown success story in product manufacturing, a company doing their utmost to keep you, me and all of us jeeping, in a era where humanity essentially maxed out the amount of carbon, that over last 120 yrs of industrialisation, have transferred into the atmosphere of the planet.

Why not support jeep trying to keep us all jeeping? Why not support fca and the rest your players in the fight of their lives against a distant manufacturing titan that doesn’t pay its workers much more than a handful of dollars a month or even blink at selling products at a loss with the sole intention to harm your esteemed and historic auto manufacturers, who’s tech they’ve ripped off for decades.

Oh for sure Jeep has to hit the fuel economy numbers.

I mean just get behind Jeep. Just get behind what they’re doing. They’re doing it for really good reasons.

how old is your PC?
The days of build your own and modify hardware in seconds is all but gone unless you get a gaming desktop. There's a huge move to the "all-in-one" like Apple pioneered decades ago.
Laptops and desktops often have weird memory configurations that make upgrades more difficult.
I used to buy case, motherboard, video card, power supply, etc. etc. of my own choosing - today, check out stores like Best Buy, Costco and others and see what the offerings are. You can still order and build, but it's not like it used to be.
The days of "my type of computer" are gone - heck, the video card is 3/4 of the bloody system. All I wanted was a good computer - but to get some of what I wanted, it was like buying a 2024 model year Gladiator - you must buy high-end gaming machines to get that stuff - you must buy a X model to get those seats.

Big box stores are like that, find a MicroCenter store and you’ll be happier.

Pacardbell tried that all-in one model back in the 90s, and lost tons of market share to Gateway computers. It’s a cycle.

Talking to a Jeep Engineer yesterday at the Jeep display at EJS we will see the 3.0l Hurricane in the JL/JT along with expanded 4xE options in the 3rd Qtr of 2025 so they some time to work out the kinks before I need to replace my Mojave in 2026. I also have an '02 TJ that I will never sell for all the reasons listed here already ?

Those are being sold like crazy today. In fact, half of all computers my son and I were digging into were all-in-ones and the other half aimed at "gamers" with video systems that outclassed server processing power (kidding - maybe)

My son, the computer geek (now working at Bank America or some place like that making their software systems all talk to each other, that sort of thing) - anyway, he dug online into the parts the systems I was looking at had and did figuring - even through the discount computer parts places, by the time the power supply, mother board, the high-end name brand RAM, video system, etc. was accounted for, it wasn't possible to build a system with the same specs - plus Costco has their own guarantee on computers. They beat the price of every other store we went to for similar systems. The same system on Amazon was $400 more. Blew me away! Glad I didn't decide to order from Amazon. (1500 Amazon, 1100 Costco)
He showed me the exact same video card, memory and MB for sale through the online computer discounters and it just was not possible to build anything like it for Costco's price.

The last rebuild we did was a 24 valve Cummins in an 04 Ram. Once you have the wiring harness out of the way, the single wiring harness from what I recall, the motor popped right out. I had a kit in the mail in 2 days with pistons, rods, rings, gaskets, head studs after the machine shop honed it. It took maybe a grand total of 20 hours for me and my pops to drain, rip, tear up and replace and get back on the road. That included a lot of wtf do we do here without a lift and just a hoist, convincing things to go back in place, etc. Kicker is, that motor was in a work truck that was abused for 400k miles before cylinder 6 gave up the ghost due to oil starvation, but it was still running…. Emissions, computer chips, sensors, advancements in manufacturing will make tales like this an old tale… and I’m only in my only 30’s.

I dunno if I'd call pulling a 24V "popped out"... the 3 I did around that time required pulling the front end and cutting the frame to pull the front crossember. Had to re-weld it when I was done. It was very easy to disconnect though from what I can remember. Those were a super modular package.

Then again that might have just been warranty fuckery because I recall the rate being hot garbage to pull that monster out.

AIOs are super hard to compete with because they just solder all the parts to the main board. Way fewer manufacturing processes and parts required but it makes them throwaway when something dies. As bad as those parts are for the environment I will never own one for that reason. It's stupid wasteful to throw out components like CPUs and memory and modern SSDs that have decades of life just because a more prone part like motherboard power delivery fails.

No cutting here from what I recall, it was just a lot of manual labor, but doable by a non-professional mechanic in three weekends, with life in between. Everything was just very heavy.

I spent a whole lot of years with the design and manufacture of engines and transmissions. All alloy is horribly unreliable. An alloy block with appropriate thickness steel liners make for a much more reliable engine. The Hurricane 3.0 is fragile and unreliable, then couple it with two turbochargers and it becomes a throw away engine. Kind of like Toyota is experiencing with their 2.4L turbocharged engines.

If customers say no to this crap then manufactures will find another way.

The 3.6 is terrible and the 3.0 is better, but those with actual experience with the engine complain that torque is in the wrong place on the powerband.

1. Safety standards
2. Cafe numbers (cafe may actually now be the primary driver)

The truth is actually the opposite. I do agree about our rapidly changing and deteriorating climate, but, EVs are a complete non starter. Will never happen, we do not have the generating capacity not the raw materials to do a fleet conversion...

Hahahahahaha, I don't give a tinkers damn about Jeep and they don't care about me. They are doing it for self centered reasons only (they offshore every chance that they get). They could care less about customers.

If a better solution comes along I will switch in a heart beat. The only reason that I didn't switch to a Tacoma was because of the engine issues...

As an aside when I do scatter my engine then I will either do a Hemi or LS conversion... But a new Jeep is not in the future for me.

Seriously. How brain dead is that, you take out a V-8 engine, for environmental purposes, and the customer buying the truck ends up losing even more money in gas?

Seriously. How brain dead is that, you take out a V-8 engine, for environmental purposes, and the customer buying the truck ends up losing even more money in gas?

Yup, it is not a good engine choice... I don't think it will work out well for Jeep...
