The fanciest models are above my pay grade anyway.

Something like the TRD Sport with the non hybrid engine would probably fit me well. Not crazy about the screen towering over the center of the dash, but I get it - that's about all you can do with it.

Nice looking trucks, seem to be well executed. Not in the market to get rid of my Gladiator any time soon - but the new Colorado / Canyon / Tacoma could win me over compared to another Gladiator in the future.

It doesn't feel like Jeep is in a good position now for powertrain options/upgrades in the Gladiator. They came in with the JT at a great time, when the rest of the mid-size trucks were very ho-hum, so it didn't matter that the Pentastar itself is a little ho-hum, because the rest of the style and capability were so much better than all the others.

But now, everyone else has caught up to (or even surpassed) the mark the Gladiator set, so what's Jeep gonna do? They say the JT can't do other engines because of cooling capability and crashworthiness, so are they going to rest on their laurels and rely on the folks who'll buy it regardless of engine simply because it's a Jeep? Or are they going to engineer their way back into the forefront?

Agreed. They did their best with the huge screen location to also having buttons climate control.
This. A bigger screen is desired by the general public on just about any vehicle, any price point. The Tacomas dashes have most always been simple and clean, integrating the screen would have been difficult. They got away with it in the Tundra with a taller overall look, same as Jeep gets away with it in the JT.

At least they're not attempting like so many other manufacturers to make everything a touch screen function. As someone who prefers tactile buttons for important functions but likes big screens for navigation especially, this is a win.

Simple. It's the reliability that many believes. My wife 2014 IS350 F Sport bought in late 2013 have had no issues and no warranty work done. Other than typicle oil changes, just front rotors and pads replaced.

Edit: Still on the original battery too. Freaking impressive.
Toyota's mechanical reliability is legendary, if not anything it is the thing that surrounds it and ancillary electronics that can be questionable.

My 2004 Taco would still be running if it wasn't for the frame rot. Mechanically it is rock solid and even if more recent gens are less reliable than previous, they bank on that reputation and charge a distinct premium for them. And consumers pay it readily.

After all, how many Mujahideen do you see using Fords, Jeeps, or Chevy's as technicals?

Yep. Having owned 10+ Toyotas since 1980 I can say the build quality is what I love. All of my Toyotas, problems added together, don’t equal the amount of problems I had during 2 years of ownership with an American made 4x4 I owned. I will say, my Wrangler has been virtually problem free during my many years of ownership. One of the few sticking points for me to buy a new Gladiator is what it’s reliability will be. When I buy, my choice will be between the Gladiator and Tacoma.

Let's call a spade a spade.

This thing blows the gladiator away. The pentastar might as well be a carbureted flat 6 from the 50s at this point. The ranger raptor, zr2, and this are far and away the leaders of the pack. The Jeeps' diesel is dead, and the 2024 crop of midsize trucks are going to set the bar quite high.

Which, is a good thing for Jeep. It has to at least match these specs and options to compete. Not a soul alive could drive these new vehicles and think "man, I wish this had the pentastar". Toyota, to their credit, have brought some new and interesting innovations to the field.

I want these:

Such is the pace of technology. Let's see how Jeep responds.

Tacoma's are nice. I have an OG 1st gen Pre-Runner. It will outlive my Gladiator. It even has my Jeeps Wildpeaks on there LOL. Don't mind my Wrap job it was my first Wrap i did by myself. Lasted almost 5 years.

The Tacoma doesn't have a removable top so no thanks!!

does it alloe top
off?
does it allow doors off?

Lol
? just sayin! Whatever the Toy can or can’t do. It will or won’t do it with the doors and top on. I’ve had Jeeps, Broncos, and full size trucks of all brands. The Gladiator Mojave leaves them all in the dust. Nothing off-roads like a jeep. Most vehicles need 4x4 and low range, to get where the average Jeep goes in 2wd. Sway bar disconnect won’t matter. My advice to those who compromise is, be sure to have good, accessible recovery hooks…….so I can pull you out easier

They’re in a weird spot now because it’s now one of the older trucks in the segment and also the most expensive. Those are not good combinations to have when your selling point is it drives worse but you can remove the roof and doors at a $10-$20k premium.

Will not have anywhere near as much articulation of the Gladiator with a front solid axle. Maybe I am getting old, but prefer natural aspirated engine and Jeep is going to a Inline 6 Turbo that will be replacing the current 3.6. I will say the Taco looks sick, but still can't take the doors or top off of that as well. I will be keeping my Launch Edition for a while unless the Gladiator redesign/mid refresh looks good.
To be sure, Toyota is in the business of selling trucks. The current Tacoma outsold Gladiators at a 3 to 1 ratio in 2022, and this is set to continue that trend. The toyota is going to be vastly more appealing to many people in this market. While I prefer a SAS myself, I'd also prefer IFS for the 98% of the time I'm not wheeling on rocks. Heck, most of the people on this site have never rock crawled in their gladiators. Jeep doesn't win with a solid axle alone, as IFS has come a long way to doing almost any trail short of the rock buggy trails. I think Jeep fans clutch to removing doors/top and SAS to forgive the real lack of innovation that Jeep has been doing lately. It should be Jeep, not Toyota, not Ford, not Chevy, that should be bloating these vehicles with kitchy, fun, off-roadsy innovations.

Instead, Jeep plays catch-up with the Bronco and gives us factory 35s for a $20,000 upsell. They lag behind on critical features that would set them apart, but now make them seem dated:

Trail turn assist? Nope, despite this being as easy as a software update over the air.
Scene lighting? Nope
Suspension seats? Nope
Trick tailgate? Nope
Offroad camera system, ie underbody cameras? Nope
USB/Power on top of the dash? Nope
Etc. Etc.

The last real innovation Jeep made in this segment was introducing the Rubicon trim level on the TJs. Maybe the full float axles for 2024 count, but it's so meh, and so far down the list is hard to put a lot of emphasis on. The Mohave trim was playing catch up. 35s? Catch up. 392 wrangler? catchup.

Nothing off-roads like a jeep.
You are not wrong…but….the Gladiators future does not depend on off-road capability, it depends on improving its marketability. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Gladiator! However, after I put 120k on it in four years of work use (hwy driving) I plan to drop a 392 or hurricane engine into it and build it into the badass overlander I want. Not much is badass about a Gladiator (stock) right now, they are fun and unique from the factory.

Jeep needs better options to compete in the high end of this market. That Tacoma is going to appeal to a lot of buyers but most are NEVER going to make it off the pavement, without a solid front axle it will likely drive much better on pavement. Sure we can take our tops off, but I even I miss having a panoramic roof with a simple two second sunroof open/close while driving….

Most of the “off-road” midsized trucks sold are shiny objects that look tough and will tow some kids jet ski or carry a kayak. Jeep is going to need to make them shinier and I for one look forward to it!

only 4 cylinder options

1700 payload

6500 towing

and a dang tablet as a radio

No thanks
Not trying to start a war here, but give the new Tacoma credit, its pretty sweet. Not sure what article you're reading, but this is right from the article. The power option look GOOD to me. The screen is also larger than in the Jeeps (which suck, are too small) ALOT better than what we have in the Gladiator. I have a Mohave and LOVE it, but some engine options would have been nice like the Wranglers. Looks like you still can't put bigger tires on them (maybe 35's) and certainly will NOT be able to offroad like a Jeep with much larger tires.

" i-FORCE MAX pairs the 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack that creates a total system output of 326 horsepower and a whopping 465 lb.-ft. of torque "
