Is it just me, or is the cruise control horrible?

YEP, it sucks on anything other than flat land! Applies/burns the brakes on the downhill side if you don't watch it close too.
That brings up an interesting possibility... mine does not have the advanced safety package, just the basic CC. Does everyone that is seeing the wide variance have ACC, and those that see little variance have regular CC?

I have owned countless Jeep/Ram/Dodge/Chrysler vehicles and I own three right now. Mine doesn't deviate from the speed set almost to a fault. They all will downshift while going down hills to keep that speed. I get better mileage with my right foot.

Really NOT impressed with the cruise control. Especially in somewhat hilly environments, the speed varies +/- as much as 5mph from set point and the tranny does a lot of hunting.
Is this normal, or does my CC need dealer adjustment?
Have you changed tire size?

No advanced safety package on mine. No issues with holding speed.

I have the "full monte" safety package on mine......which I would skip if I had to do it over for my use.

Mine also wont maintain speed on steep grades or while towing heavy uphill on CC, but will accelerate if I push the pedal manually.

I wish more people on the highway used CC, around here the roads are loaded with subarus who CANNOT maintain a constant speed.

So instead of continually adjusting, I just set it to 65, and it's so funny because sometimes I'm blowing past traffic and sometimes I'm the slow dude. Drivers around here are ridiculous!

edit: the only time I have trouble maintaining CC speed on a hill is a very steep hill with a 25 MPH speed limit

Typical for there. Either bumper to bumper doing 80 in the pouring rain or 20. No in between

I can agree with you EXCEPT that my Jeep's cruise isn't all that consistent and it makes me look like the idiots! The ACC is even worse if you aren't paying attention.......I use to think to myself WTF with the way people drive, but after owning a vehicle with ACC, I can see what causes it.

I don’t have the advanced safety group. Mine is a diesel, and I put on 35’s and adjusted the speedo for them.
Mine maintains speed on flat ground. I think what the OP is meaning is that when encountering a hill, the speed may drop a couple mph’s, then it downshifts, and then over corrects by a couple or more mph’s. Especially as you crest the hill. There are times mine downshifts so much that it’s revving at 3500 or more rpm. Then by the time that happens, I’m cresting the hill, and it over shoots the speed by quite a bit. It’s really all over the place. So that’s why it’s easier sometimes for me to shift manually. Or cancel cruise and throttle it myself.

Every cruise control I've ever had has a +/- 5 or so mph before taking action. Newer vehicles with the more gears may lower difference. With the 8 speed, sometimes I don't even notice its dropped a gear.

Which CC are you using? I never use the standard CC; it seems superfluous when ACC is available. I have a MT, so any gear hunting is done with my right arm (with some help from my brain).

Anyway, I do have to downshift in hilly country, but most of my driving is in flat territory where the "hills" are overpasses. It generally keeps up, but I may have to drop one gear at highway speeds.

didn't you literally just trade in your subaru? 😜
Master driver qualified. I have skills. Besides, I live in the great south, where blinkers and headlights are optional, except during deluges, when Joe Dirt thinks that now is the time to put their hazards on and go 38 MPH under the posted limit.
