In the market for a new Gladiator. I have found some good deals but most do not have the towing package. Is there a difference in towing capacity with installing an aftermarket hitch verses one from the factory? I would like to tow a small travel trailer.

Travel trailer is 1280 pounds. Is there that much difference in towing capacity?

At that weight you’ll be fine with any JT configuration. My wife’s CRV can tow 1500lbs. Unless you think you may go over roughly 3,000lbs someday you’re in no danger. Of course all of that assumes you’re not driving crazy fast or massive inclines while towing. At least that’s my opinion.

The factory tow package gets you not only the hitch receiver but also all the proper wiring for towing...not only do you get the flat four for basic utility trailers, but you also get the seven pin connector which gets you the lighting features and the ability to charge the trailer's battery, plus keep things running whilst towing like a refrigerator and such. Plus, it gets you the ability to add electronic braking. That's just on the trailer end. Additionally, the factory towing package gets you additional cooling, and a more powerful alternator to handle the additional electrical load that comes with towing a trailer.

Bottom line, go for the factory tow package.

the main difference isn't necessarily just a hitch. It a beefier alternator, HD cooling for the engine and trans, and couple more bits and bobs. Things that will help the longevity of your powertrain when working to pull more than its own weight. Now a stock no tow Glady is absolutely fine but never in my life have i seen a person still to the trailer they got. As soon as you get a vehicle with more capacity and you realize you can get a good deal on a bit more square footage and your truck can handle it. Well lets just say it can be a vicious cycle of putting cart before horse. My first travel trailer i bought to tow behind my wrangler sport s. I had a tundra but it was on its last leg and i was planning to sell it anyway. Ended up trading in the wrangler and my old mini for a lightly used glady rubicon w/tow package and a new mini s. So inevitably i somehow ended up with a bigger travel trailer too. what I'm trying to say is. You should probably just get one with a tow package cus you never know. But ultimately go with the best deal that your comfortable with and if it doesn't have a tow package. no biggy its still a great truck.

The max towing package is a upgrade to cooling system any gladiator can tow 4000 to 5000 pounds you can add a 2 inch receiver hitch that’s good for 4000 lb for $100 on Amazon it easily installed I had dealer install a break controller as part of my he purchase of my gladiator sport with manual transmission they told me it could tow 5000 lbs

Yea there’s a big difference in equipment and rating. Full max tow package rating is 7,700 lbs gas engine. If you add an aftermarket hitch, I personally think would only use the MOPAR hitch, will result in much lower ratings. Not to mention the load capacity with the Max Tow is 1,745 lbs. without around 1,070 or so depending upon options.

Max tow does upgrade cooling but there is a list of other upgrades as well. And I wouldn’t believe anything that a sales guy at a dealership tells me. Reference your user manual, a MT sport can only tow 4,000lbs max.

I installed the Mopar 2 inch hitch myself But when I lifted it 2 inches and did the 37s even though I did 4.88s I think I may have really lowered my tow ability. I fear that every thing we do to make them more able off road hurts the towing.

You are absolutely correct on that. Higher tow vehicle height increases frontal windage area, and the increased weight of larger tires impacts total GVW therefore lowering your towing capacity. Plus, inherent reduced tow vehicle stability from the lift 'can' make it a bit more dangerous to tow. Re-gearing can help with your 'get-em-up-n-go' but you also have to stop what you got moving and increased un-sprung weight will have an impact in that vein too.
