Just because it came from a yahoo article doesnt make it so. Highly misleading and over exaggerated IMO and I doubt this will be on any 2027 model. Its funny if you click the link in the yahoo article for the NHTSA it links to the emergency braking rules mandatory in 2029. So I call bullshit on this. Some of this is true a law in 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is the first part of this but the timeline is not firm or obtainable by 2027.

Always wondered what happened to the kid who would remind the teacher that she forgot to assign homework...
That is funny, but people act like the world is going to end if a camera gets put in a car. “Welp I’ll never buy a new car EVER again”. “Sales will drop by a billion percent”. “The value of my old ass jeep just went up!”

If this is what gets people fired up I find it hilarious.

Its easy to see on this thread the “heat the lobster slowly” theory.

If you can’t see the privacy drawbacks of this type system, more power to ya. 🤣😂🤣😂

The thing with privacy is most people happily give it up all day every day. Hell yall post your trips and rides in here all the time. A lot of people share every mundane detail of their stupid lives all over the internet. Just using map apps on your phone...everything is watching at all times. Listening. Alexa, Siri, ChatGPT...whatever. It sucks but I don't wanna go back to phone books and rotary phones and actually having to write a letter. Fuck that.

This technology is fraught with potential problems.
  • Will it be able to see through dark sunglasses on a bright summer's day? Or do I have to drive while blinded by the sunlight?
  • Can you override it if it won't let you move your car but you need to take your child to the hospital?
  • Will it work correctly if you have any disabilities or disfigurements that make you look tired or drunk? Saggy eyelids, for example.
  • Will it work differently or be incorrect more often for some races and their facial structures?
  • How exactly is it determining % alcohol from looking at your face? Alcoholics can have a pretty high alcohol content without appearing so.
  • What about all those commuters first thing in the morning trying to get to work who can't start their cars because they look tired?
  • Will ESS start your car back up at the stoplight when it turns green if this new system says you look tired or drunk?
  • How will it work when off road? Do you always need to be looking forward, can't look at that tree that is inches away from taking out a fender?
Yes, IR light just like Apple's FaceID works with sunglasses.

There will probably be a phone number or (more likely) an Ai "agent" you must chat with and submit details for the "emergency".

They tried this, and it isn't consistent. Another reason they know it's unreasonable, but don't care because maybe those people shouldn't be driving...(their mindset, not mine).

Remember all those face scans for "age verification"? Yup, that data IS being sold FOR PROFIT, via a FRONT DOOR in the software. This was already exposed recently regarding Discord/etc partner for "age verification".

Passive breathalyzers in-vehicle.

They can't use how you "look" as probable cause, just like how the police try it and lawyers use this simple trick to toss the case: "Have you ever met my client before? Then how would you know what they look like or their medical history? Where did you get your medical degree?"

ESS isn't related, since it let you start driving already. Maybe if you started drinking AFTER you started driving. But see how this "safety tech" is already an issue?

They'd probably make it disabled in 4L. Since most vehicles don't have 4L anymore (brand new High Sierra only had 2H, 4Auto, 4H) and are even switching to FWD-based "AWD" since they must meet higher MPG/emissions standards.

It'll be funny until it happens to you. Then it'll be hilarious.

The "nanny state" of monitoring drivers is absolutely laughable. Apples to pears comparison- Years ago we did that insurance OBD-plugin for 3 months that analyzed driving habits. I drove very timidly and like I figured it wanted me to. My wife drove slightly more cognizant of it being plugged in her car, too. Not like we were a-hole drivers to begin with, either.

Turns out our "driving habits" increased our risk because we accelerated 30% of the time more than other drivers, used excessive braking, and something-something else.

It was completely context-less. We commuted to work on the freeway, so we had to accelerate on an on-ramp. Then we had stop-and-go traffic most of the way. Once off the freeway, there was 3-4 miles of stoplight-littered streets to navigate. Then reverse it to get home. It seemed the only thing it really tracked was the amount of acceleration and braking used as a percent of driving time.

<facepalm>

So even though we had no wrecks, no tickets, commutes under 15mi, multiple cars, cars with almost all the safety features (at the time) - no discounts. And it sounded like we were lucky not to get a raise in rates.

So I don't really trust any "monitoring" device inside a vehicle that's going to evaluate my ability to operate a vehicle. Maybe a breathalyzer, but that's why I have a pack of mint gum in my cars.
And when I did it, I drove 10-15 over the limit, at 3am all the time, raced the car, power slides, etc...and my rate went DOWN 12-14% after.

The new law (or a similar new law) also stated they are working on forcing manufacturers to have mandated passive breathalyzers by MY2028. No we're not giving up any freedoms!

Damn, why did you have to call me out?

Let me introduce you to the idea of "consent" - I could knowingly post photos of my trip to this forum, but it doesn't mean I'm streaming video of myself in my car every time I drive. You only see the stuff people share; you don't see the stuff they don't. Might also want to check out the concept of confirmation bias.

If you can't tell the difference, well, let's just say I wouldn't want to be your prom date.

For people concerned about privacy
some of you may be horrified to learn
digital images that you contribute
to forums like this one
may contain location data, GPS metadata,
that can be read by the government
or by total strangers.

This became an issue for me
because on this and other forums
I share images of firearms
and would rather not reveal their location.

My survivalist conspiracy theorist cousin
was shocked when I sent
a map image to him
showing exactly where he was standing
when he photographed and texted to me
a remote and isolated property
he was visiting.

"To prevent embedded location data (EXIF/GPS metadata) in photos shared online, disable location services for your camera app in device settings. (Techniques vary depending on the cell phone used.) For photographs already taken use messaging apps that strip metadata (like Signal), or use photo editing tools to remove EXIF data before posting."

My FBI friends tell me to screen shot pics then edit the screenshot before posting
