Officially just became a card-carrying member of the "Pentastar Haters Club"

2022 Rubicon. 27K miles. Tick of death started. Pulled the RH cover and the #5 intake cam was chewed down almost eighth of an inch . My rig has a rebuilt title so no warranty for this guy.:(

My original plan all along consisted of "hope I'm not one of the (many) unlucky ones" followed by "toss this POS motor in the dumpster and install a V8".

But fate is rarely so kind to me. It happened while I am 1500 miles from home attending the funeral of my father. So I'm forced to order a Mullin aftermarket cam kit and have a local shop do the work for me just so I can get me and my 3 dogs home (wife already said "F- THIS SH-!" and jumped a plane)

What is the cause of this? Obviously it's a well know issue, so what is the first sign this is happening and can it be prevented? I had a 2013 Wrangler with the Pentastar, but had to trade it in after only about 32,000 miles, and I didn't have any problems with it. My wife currently has a 2018 JLUS with over 100,000 miles, and hers hasn't had any issues, either. Is this something with the latest generation of the engine? Thank you!

It has been a thing on all 3.6l engines.
There are a lot of theories as to why.
Most seem to settle on the dry start (No anti drain back in the oil filter setup), or the metallurgy of the cams.
Jeep said that they fixed the issue in 2015 I believe, but as you can see that was BS.
I know of 6 of these types of 3.6l engine failures in just my small group of friends.
If they make it to 120k without issues it’s a feat. As you can tell by everyone on the Jeep forums bragging that they made it that far without this issue.

Iirc, these engines used a 5W30 oil, at least thats what i used in mine. Did they switch to something lighter like an 0W20 to increase mileage.

I cannot say for sure. What I can say is that I changed the oil regularly. Didn't drive it particularly hard. towed a small camper a handful of times. The rest of the time it was just a commuter. and yet it happened to me just like its happened to thousands of others. And in a relatively short amount of miles. So few that, if Jeep had not canceled my warranty it would still be covered.

this screams "design flaw" to me. not that it matters. Jeep would deny that until their dying day if that were false. And also if it were true.

Oh well...maybe someday I'll get a voucher for $500 off a new Jeep after the class action lawsuit. 😜

Had this happen to mine about 85,000 miles. Luckily I bought it through our fleet account with Enterprise which gives me an extra 50,000 mile engine warranty, so it was covered.

Just wondering ... What oil & weight did you use and how often did you change the oil?

Also, how often did you run higher rpm (above 3000) to put the oil pump into high pressure mode? There has been some talk over on BITOG that these engines need regular high rpm to get fresh oil to the top of the engine.
