To get to the turbo, because of where it is, the standard way, the book way, is to lift the cab off the chassis. That makes the turbo accessible. It is not as bad as it sounds, they use the same lift you would use to lift the whole vehicle in the air to lift the cab off the chassis. Even with all that they should be able to do it in a day or so.
I have it extensively kitted, inside and out. I guess I’ll find out - I have that code.

it’s out of regular warranty but I have the factory extended warranty. So it should only cost me $100. Fingers crossed.

It falls under the 5 year 100k mile powertrain warranty. But most places will charge you the extra labor if they have to remove any wiring, accessories, etc. to lift the cab off. I personally don't want them messing with my wiring, so I pulled anything that would cause issues with lifting the cab off.

I think it reset since the check engine light is out, drove 500 miles on this trip and it happened on the beginning part of the trip.

Getting covered by warranty is all good, but long term doesn’t give a warm n fuzzy to repeatedly paying for turbos

So does a failed turbo actuator, P00AF code, automatically trigger the other codes the OP described? Is the ECM programmed to do this?

If not, wouldn’t this more likely be the wire harness previously mentioned?

I went through this in the first year of ownership. I was checking the codes each time it went into limp mode. Not consistent. Not tied to each other. The only consistent thing was the wire harness and what it attached too.
I wrapped the harness with heat shield, plus other items…. Haven’t had a derate/limp mode problem since. No multiple code events.
As too why now. Everything degrades over time.

The consensus is, if your turbo is bad, replacing solves the problem. It does appear to be a known problem, but it does not appear to be a re-occurring problem. People don't seem to have this issue more than once, generally.

Well it’s P00AF I’m going to try and take my jeep into my dealer who in the past has been of no help. Let’s see what they will do.

Mine did that at the beginning of our current Alaska trip. I have a very heavy overlanding rig with 35" tires . On the long incline from Phoenix to Flagstaff I was not watching temps as I did not think I needed to. It went into limp mode and we had to pull over to turn the engine off and reset it. I did get the P00AF code. Cleared the codes let it cool down and took off. Now I watch oil temps on any incline and if it approaches 260, slow down or stop and let it cool off. The thought of replacing the turbo and pulling the cab would be a nightmare. I would have to remove the RTT and all of the wiring going from the bed to the cab. I think I'm going to wait and see if it does it again.

The P00AF code is linked to a faulty part (turbo actuator). Ram and Jeep are fully aware and have been instructed to replace the part under the 5 year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. So far, everyone that I have collected data for (posted below) hasn't reported any additional issues after the new turbo was installed. Some of these guys do a lot of heavy towing, so they would know pretty quickly. As of today, there's been a 100% success rate for a turbo replacement. As for timelines, some people had their turbo replaced 2+ years ago.

That stretch of road should be required for all mfrs to do their reliability testing on.

It will quickly show your weakness. i just ran it on 37's, 4.10's pulling a 8x16 double axle enclosed trail full of motorcycles and your temps will certainly rise.

It would be interesting to see how that stretch of road would compare to the 11.4-mile Davis Dam Grade, which is what manufacturers use to determine the SAE J2807 towing capacity. The test requires an ambient temperature of 100*F and the air conditioner set to max cold with full fan mode. The tow vehicle has to maintain at least 40 mph and cannot trigger a warning or code the entire test run.
