New JT Gladiator Steering Issue TSB 08-074-20 (for "Improved Steering Feel")

Except for the dead spot in the middle, I had no issues with my steering. Getting the box replaced eliminated the dead spot.

Does anyone know if they will still do the Steering box update after I have done a lift and steering stabilizer?

There is a certain amount of subjectivity involved. When the issue really was brought up earlier with the JL and now the JT, there still was a certain amount of people who claimed they had no problem. Maybe they did, maybe they did not but not having a point of reference for some I think made people thing they had no issue and everybody else who complained were being hyper sensitive and overblowing the issue.

For me, I had owned a JL and my current JT that was a early build and felt I fell in the middle but after time I started to convince myself I had no issue as I had gotten use to a certain amount of muscle memory in driving. Now that I have had the TSB done, I can say it was evident and was an issue.

There is no guarantee you will be fine with the Aluminum steering gear box for the long haul. Since the TSB is driven on the owner reporting an issue, I would suggest just taking it in and getting the TSB addressed and on the list for parts to queue up and get it done for piece of mind.

... they called on Friday and my steering box will be replaced tomorrow, exactly 2 weeks after approving it. .... Will update after driving for a while.

It took two days, but they got her done. They called near the end of day 1 and said a bolt into the steering shaft had been cross-threaded at the factory, so they wanted to replace that shaft and they needed a day to get that part in. I appreciate that they didn't just jam another bolt in the effed up threads and pass it off that way, so I was fine with the extra time it took.

Haven't had it on the highway at speed yet, but found a suitable stretch of road that convinced me it is noticably improved.

I have the old aluminum gear box, part number P68418449AE, but i feel like my steering is tight, responsive, doesn't pull and is otherwise what i would think is "normal" at slow speeds and highway speeds. Am I dense, or are some old aluminum boxes OK and some are bad, or are they all pretty much bad and i don't know the difference? My JT has just under 20k miles if that makes any difference. Scared my warranty will run out and then my steering gear start acting up and i'm having to pay full price to replace it, i guess. Are any of the old aluminum ones good?

I felt the same way until about 25k miles and mine started loosening up. It made a big improvement for me. I think the issue is over time the aluminum wears down and flexes.

I will keep that in mind.. was it a gradual process or something that came up more suddenly ?

To be honest it was probably a gradual process but I think I grew used to the issue so didn't notice as much. The notchy steering seemed to happen over the last month. What i have noticed is the notchy problem is now gone and the steering is much tighter after the repair. I didn't realize it was so loose until it got tight if that makes sense.

I always thought that mine was "not horrible." After I got the TSB, I realized that it actually was pretty horrible. Mine was dramatically improved.

Had the TSB done last week at our local shop. I also didn't think mine was that bad until I got the TSB. Made a big difference. No more constant correction to go in a straight line. Well worth doing.

My dealer called me to bring my Jeep back in before getting the parts. They said FCA wants numbers and apparently the color of a dot on the box. Apparently there is a green dot, a yellow dot or some other color. The color dictates the box needed. Any one else experience that?

I wonder what that nonsense is about? TSB is pretty clear what gearbox to order based on model.

True! Taking mine in tomorrow morning for second replacement of gear box and not once has anyone said anything about a colored dot. Only new info I was given is the replacements replacement is an newly updated gear box than I got in September. We will see.....

Dealer told me there was a new TSB and that there are multiple boxes depending on the color of the dot. First time I heard anything about that, but I will let them do their job. Small dealer with mechanics that have been there for a long time.
