I thought I remembered reading that the transfer case breather tube on the JL/JT is especially short. Breather hose lengths would probably have to be increased for TCase and axles. With the bow wave in the front i'm not sure you would risk submerging things like the oil fill tubes or whatnot.
It is about 1" above the transfer case

I like this response on another forum. Guy says he is an very harsh areas of Alaska. From his other post on threads about the JT, I got the impression he believes JTs wouldnt last 5 minutes on Alaska trails

Do you understand how rare it is to have water that deep with 1) a solid bottom and 2) standing water versus moving water? Do you understand what it would take to waterproof an entire electrical system from water damage? put a fuse panel/wire harness in the sink and get it wet, then throw it outside for a few days and repeat for a summer.. by the end of summer not one circuit will still work as it did when new, now do the same with every switch/sensor/motor/control on a vehicle and you will be lucky if half of them work in an hour..then add in all the computers/injectors and all the other super sensitive electronics....And finally, put 60 K of volts thru a plug wire under water while holding it in your hand..you will only do it once...

So besides the electrical you now also have to make everything mechanical watertight..axles/t-case/transmission/steering system/brakes, none of them are sealed, nor can they be because they have to breath as they heat and cool during use..any water will destroy them in short order...

And the final and main reason, and what cracks me up about the guys using snorkels..in any real world actual need such as from flooding where water is moving.. the vehicle will rarely go much past the water touching the bottom of the body, unless its very slow moving... As soon as the water has any serious flow going, the moment it touches the body the vehicle is headed down stream, long before a snorkel would be of any use...I know because we cross a lot of moving water, you have to here if you want to go anywhere..not one of our buggys has a snorkel, not one..we are careful to seal the engine compartment enough to be able to stuff the hood under water for a second without drowning the engine out, but no snorkels...

This is about as deep as you can get one of our buggys before the water will drag it down stream...

Also, the point of snorkels is way more about dust than it is water. The idea of snorkels being a ā€œthingā€ for water started with camel trophy stuff where it’s a hard core truck/problem solving adventure race.

People who live in africa or the ME know its about getting the intake up above the dust line primarily; and your hope of last resort for water.

That is primarily their purpose, but snorkels do raise the air intake high enough so you don't suck water into the engine along with the air. They help against those unexpected dips and splashes.

Why cant modern Jeeps do what Land Cruisers were doing decades ago? Besides a snorkel, what mods are needed for a Jeep to go this deep?

Yes, I made a thread last year on water fording depth. This thread is different. It asks for information on what the Land Cruisers have that JTs dont and feasibility of upgrading new tech with such old tech

In all seriousness, the electrical. Coil in plug will take a dump. Ultimate water fording was old school diesels, no electronics, no spark plugs. Just keep water out of the intake any go as low as you wanna go.
So what's this I am reading about water getting into the following:

hub seal, tube seal, pinion seal, or shaft seal, with ujoints/cardigan stems ball joints/tierod ends

How likely is this to happen? I dont even see these areas rusting as an issue in Jk discussions

Live in Africa for a few years. Lol. Im a total land cruiser homer now. Theyre just bad ass trucks.
I lived in Ethiopia for awhile. Drove these two vehicles for the NGO. God they were awesome. Really miss turning the lock on the wheel itself. Tires were usually bald but we ran tubes and somehow managed to get out of everything... Learned a lot.

(Pictures generic from internet. Ours were squared off on the front, and beat the hell up.)

Now this is just ridiculous...

Do Land Cruisers have floor drain plugs?

Oh btw I recall a guy took a JK through Africa, like all around, and intentionally chose the back roads without pavement. Think it took him all summer, though he avoided the rainy season and it was mostly dry

So sealing tech has gotten worse over the last 20 years?

Cant see anything special in MotoBiscuits article or discussion on forums specific to LC water abilities

I wasn't thinking that it may be worse today, I was thinking that in today's world if something goes wrong it blows up in the companys face on social media, recalls, etc. Look at the guy who kept running his Jeep through deep mud, he got national media attention when it was largely his own fault. Now imagine if it is something that Jeep warranties and people have a bad batch of seals etc. I mean there's bad electronic lockers already. Just a different world today.

I believe it was a girl who was the center of that story

You’ll get water in the differential and other places going that deep. You don’t just leave it. You have to replace it pretty soon.
My experience is if you keep moving steadily, the water doesn’t really get in. If you stop and go too slow or too fast, that’s when you have a problem.
I try and avoid mud and water deeper than about 2’.

PS Turn around, don’t drown.
