Not sure where is best for this, if a better place please feel free to move.

Been set on a diesel 3.0 since the were launched. As I'm thinking and mulling I'm getting close to changing my mind.

Diesel towing and Tq+ at lower rpm main reason for one. Issues payload, def problems in cold, now heat issues under load. Fuel capacity, minor but annoying. I live in Idaho; teens in winter are common. Main reason for the rig is as a tow vehicle for my 16' toy hauler. I travel in the summer/spring, high desert, hot long hauls all over the west. The ripe areas for over heats apparently. Add in cost upfront and it has me thinking.

Magnusson, + HP out the wazoo and tq. I can order a Max Tow (and be one the cool kids who posts that every time!). Get higher pay load and tow ratings. Have the power and tq beyond the diesel. Better fuel capacity but worse mileage portably a wash on range. Be a slightly higher total out lay, 4500 diesel package vs 7500 for the supercharger installed.

Diesel factory warrantied, supercharger via Magnusson, I'll need to read what they cover if the unit takes out an eng or drive train.

Thoughts? Ideas, feed back?

The diesel is actually a $6,500 upcharge because they bill you an extra $2000 for the up-rated transmission. Making the difference a lot closer

if I were to do it again, I’d go the magnusson route.

Id vote Magnusson for all of the reasons you already noted.

Not to deter you from them but I believe Hamburgers has a 36k mile warranty. Magnusson may as well??

I'd be all over that Maggie. In fact, I think you just cost us BOTH some money!

Warranties update; just read it. Covers the supercharger, engine, transmition and rear end, up to 16.5k, 12.5k for the eng and supercharger 2500 for the transmition. Lot of little details you can read your self.

3/36k must be installed prior to the 3/36k mark of the original vehicle and is not transferable. Must be installed by OEM dealer, Magnusson cert shop or an SAE cert mechanic.

All in all fairly reasonable.

I’m a simple guy. Decided to go with a diesel and a Warranty with extended service. I haven't had any issues in the last 1100 miles.

I assume testing has been done with the magnusson and towing? Not sure how thats covered under warranty.

i do know that Jeep isnt going anywhere and I can always drop it off if something goes wrong. If you put in something aftermarket and as intrusive as a supercharger, that creates a gap for finger pointing.

Now if Jeep offered an optional magnusson thats warrantied under them, i may have gone supercharger.

I'm a big fan of the Magnusson, and that's my plan, but talk to this guy, he's a guru on this:

The diesel upgrade they say is a $6k option. This is true, I believe, only if you were considering an stick.

$2k for the auto over a stick
$4k fir the diesel

Warranty, even if provided by magnusson, is probably sketchy at best. This is pure opinion and not based on any fact.

There were a handful of folks with a def issue in really cold temps. There were just as many, if not more people with zero issues. I had zero issues in Colorado nor the single digits for multiple days here in TX.

I have 7,600 trouble free diesel miles.

Depending on the weight you tow, and the frontal area of the toy hauler do your research. I had a supercharged tacoma for a bit, I can tell you towing it had more power, but it did not improve gear hunting, and the fuel costs go way up having to run premium. Also all that extra fuel burnt leads to other things as well, spark plug change intervals (and types of plugs)..

Also remember the vehicle itself is engineered to particular specifications, meaning everything from brake performance, engine mounts, suspension, cooling system, is not configured for the supercharger.

While it is fun to burry that pedal and turn those tires, I would weigh your options very carefully.

If you are towing, and are under 60% of what Jeep states, I would go gas, without the supercharger, deal with the slower towing speeds, but know you are saving on wear, premium gas requirements (or at least recommendations).

If you are over that, and towing is the main purpose of the vehicle, get a full size truck.

I have the diesel. Towing when cold is great..... But heat (summer) and hills (colorado). is my main goal, and so far it SUCKS for that.

I ended up cancelling an order for the 3.6. It would have been my third. It’s a fantastic motor and so ubiquitous, if you throw a rod, $1k later and you’ve got a reman short block at your door. $2k and you have a complete long lock. Great aftermarket support including forged internals by Carrillo (I think) and solid F/I options. Then I test drove the diesel and it impressed and charmed me immensely. Spent another few weeks mulling it over before cancelling (lost 1k on that). Ordered a diesel Willys at 6% off invoice.

At the EOD the effort and potential gains, for me, didn’t make sense over the diesel. I would have opted for an auto anyway so cost wasn’t really a big factor.

Banks dropped their EPA compliant tune. Results look fantastic so far. GDE is supposed to release their diesel tune in the fall.

At this point I’d opt for the diesel again with the 22’ 4Xe being next, 3.6 last. As fantastic as that motor is, investing it for performance isn’t really super sensible in my book.

Interesting points all few notes;

Fuel costs premium vs diesel, premium is less in my neck of the woods.

Towing my rig is 7’ wide V nose tandem trailer loaded out will be solid 5500 pounds.

I don’t want a full size truck, want to be able to park in the garage lol. And we’ll want the Jeep.

Magnusson has been around forever, I have faith in there warranty; you guys know the supercharged Tacoma’s? Ya those are Magnusson Toyo put there name on.

Could tune a D, but that’s not going to help at all on a heat issue and voids the power train warranty.

Its been over 100 here for almost a month and all my camping trips are longer trips.

Magnusson will void the factory power train warranty too.

Do you have certified magnusson installers where you are?

Magnusson warranty is based on the vehicles in-service date. 3yr36k, which ever comes first.

oh, it is secondary to the OEM Jeep warranty. So you have to take it to the dealership first.Pay your $100+ diagnostic fee, get denied, then look to magnusson.

Transmission is only $2,500. That will get eaten up in one problem. Happens again? There is no more $$.

Axle messed up? $1,500. Once you’ve used $1500, there is no more. Even if you are less than 2 years old with 13,000 miles.

they are eroding limits of coverage.

Oh, you get 3 days rental coverage. (Psst, it’ll take 2 weeks+ to get some of these parts).

I’m not negative to a SC, just to a ā€œwarrantyā€ proposition.

I personally like knowing I have a warranty that doesn’t erode, no diagnostic fees, and rental for as long as the dealer has my rig.

PS off-roading voids the warranty and your capped at 37ā€ tires.
