Ok I'm also close to 70, I bought a lot of my tires at OK rubber welders in the day. Yes that was a chain of tire recap stores in the 60s. When I was in HS the gas station I worked at ( a Texaco) sold a lot of re-refined motor oil for 20 cents a quart.

Anyone recall Blue Velvet oil? That's one of the oils we sold (the station out front, also part of the dealership, sold Kerr McGee products) We sold a lot of that stuff.

I was working in a shop that sold a few tires (meaning not tons, but enough to keep us going) and recall when radials became the thing. I decided to put a set on my 68 Javelin when the polyglas wore out. What a change.

Recap tires were a big deal back then, too - not just for OTR rigs.

With a modern gas engine, you're wasting money if you dump the oil at 3,000-5,000 miles. There has been a ton of oil analysis that has shown these synthetic oils are just getting broken in at 5k. You can easily use the oil life monitor in the gauge cluster for those engines.

With the diesels, you need to be changing more frequently. The manual says to never surpass 10,000 miles but most data you'll see makes it pretty obvious that you really should be looking at 7,500 miles or less. I've had two of these diesels and both would get down to 5% oil life remaining prior to 8,000 miles which is pretty accurate. There's just too much soot and fuel in the oil on a diesel to run long intervals. Gas engines don't have that issue.

My grandfather was a long hall trucker Atlanta to LA one round trip a week. He was a firm believer in recaps. When he could not get them for his personal vehicles he thought it was a plot to make ,more money for the tire companies.

TreadWright would have loved to sell your grandfather some tires for his personal vehicle. They made a killing remolding tires for many years. I think they got bought out by a new owner a few years ago and they moved to Texas.

I'm not surprised. Mine is 6900 and still 35%. I changed it at 3,000 miles. I plan to change it again at 7500 miles. I will continue every 7500 or when oil life reaches 10%.

My grandfather bought all his tires from a small shop in Anniston Al. When they closed in the mid 70's he was very unhappy. Next set of tires he got was a new set of Firestones and he said they did not ride as well as recaps that were already broken in. The oil issues in the mid 70's closed the recap business in my area. I bought a few sets a young broke married man with a baby, $15.00 tires were the way to go.

Early Gen-X here and every 3k miles was instilled at an early age. Money was tight so that 3k oil then went into the tractors, then bar oil for the chainsaws, finally poured on brush piles, stumps, dust control.

It's with knowledge and technology that has broken me free of the 3k mile oil changes, however the only sensors I'll be trusting to judge oil is sight, smell and touch.

That is until my sensors fail, might should have bought that extended warranty after all.

My oil life indicator drops about 1% every 100 miles. I normally change mine every 7000 miles and there's roughly 30% left.

My $.02 after having my JT and previously a Colorado ZR2...

Having been neurotic in a past life about fluid changes at insanely low miles on previous vehicles, with my 2014 JKU, I wanted actual data rather than, "I ran hard...let me change X". So I started sending oil samples to Blackstone. I began around 65k miles on the JKU and the report came back with terms like, "excellent" and messages like, "try to go 8k miles". So much so that at my last sample I sent them, they suggested punching out to 10k miles as the oil properties were not broken down much nor did I have much, if any contaminants. So with the 2019 ZR2, I took it in for one of its free changes at 30% oil life "to be safe". I was assured that Chevy says to go by the oil reminder and there is no need. With my 21 JT, I took it in around 35% for Jeep Wave change and same thing.

Once I'm out of Jeep Wave changes, I'm going to begin sending back out to Blackstone again.

Also, as an aside, since 2017 I've used exclusively Pennzoil Pure Platinum and that's what was sent to Blackstone. I used to be a Mobil 1 fan for my cars/trucks and Royal Purple for my bikes but I've certainly converted to Pure Platinum.
why is the main reason that you went with penzoil coming from mobil one cause im in the same stage, ive always ran with mobil one but i kinda want to try something different with my new ecodiesel, was thinking on going with either Valvoline or penzoil, maybe even amsoil since many use it.....but i dont know

The Pennzoil was previously recommended purely because of some long running beef between Mopar and Mobil. Same reason the Mobil 1 did not carry the MS -6395 approval until the last year or two....but does now.

This idea that there is some magic "sensor" that determines oil life left is not how it works.

Operating conditions are monitored using things like engine temp, speed, outside air temp, number of starts, and the data is used to compute oil life.

It's an accurate way to do it and they likely fall on the side of caution as well.

This has been proven time and time again with oil analysis by thousands and thousands of people.

This notion that somehow you know better by squishing used oil through your fingers or smelling it is foolish.

If you want to know, send it to a lab for a report. Or just trust the system and the countless others who have sent oil for analysis showing life left at 10k and over.

Now, I like many change it a little early as I travel a lot and don't want to run past a safe mark while on the road. But I also realize that not changing it till 10k or so would be fine.

Habits are hard to break. But, it's measurable and not with your finger.
