Is anyone running 35’s with 3.73 gears? How is gas? And does anyone tow with them? I have a 19ft boat right around 1200 lbs that I will be towing and I want to make sure I have plenty of power to get it out of the water and tow uphill.
I've been rocking 35s and 3.73s for about 34000 miles now and it's been fine.
I think I average 17-18MPG most of the time.
I live in Utah right now so even the hills and altitude hasn't really been bad either.

315/70r-17 KO2’s with pedal commander isn’t too bad. Will need to re-gear eventually but fine for D.D. See lots of 7th gear, some 8 but not too often and IMO I’m pretty conservative on the skinny pedal compared to most.

3.73’s on 35 x 12.50 MT Baja Boss. Mix of local stop and go and expressway driving. Average is 16 mpg. Suffers from hills, wind, slight incline. I’m not really happy with the 3.73’s. Regearing is next on my list. I’m thinking 4.56 will be about right for how and where I drive it but am following the 4.88 discussions with a lot of interest.

Currently sitting at 13.1 MPG. Small hills here and there and all in town driving. After my next field trip later this year I will go to 4.88s. Best I've ever got was like 15.9 and that was going from Fort Hood to Fort Benning and even that did not last long.

Why the big jump to 4.88? Why not 4.10 or something in between?
3.73 to 4.10 isn’t a big enough change to warrant the cost and time.

4.27 doesn’t exist for these axles.

4.56 works fine, but it’s a 2 overdrive transmission with a V6 in front of it. Might as well go with the lower 4.88. It’s a 200 RPM difference on the highway at 70 mph and you get 7% more torque multiplication. Seems like a good trade off to me.

I'm still running on my stock 31's with 3.73 gears, and unless I can figure out a way to get the money for a regear at some point, I'm planning on going to 33's instead of 35's. I take enough trips where I am kinda fond of 7th and 8th gear.

Are you seeing 7th and 8th pretty frequently? I’m leaning towards 4.56 but it seems like a lot of others jumped to 4.88
It will go in 8th at 45mph, so yeah I see it all the time. I just made the comment that it will drop to 7th from time to time. Stock gearing and 35’s it never went above 6th unless I was going down hill or coasting.

Here are my rpm’s at 65mph with current setup

I drive from Sacramento to Reno 2 times a month no problem at all with 12.50 x 35s and 373s. Sacramento to redding 70 mph she will stay in 8 th gear most of the time. There is less than 400 RPM difference from 7th to 8th gear
Ive been to Oregon a few times in the last month (Turkey Season) and Im on 35 x 12.5 / 3.73.
I was doing great about 3/4`s of the way - Bay Area up to Redding was easy money - but man once you get up into the high country near the Oregon border it all goes to hell. I was considering keeping the 3.73`s as my day to day driving impact is noticeable but not insane, but after those trips there was no question in my mind of going to 4.56 or 4.88.

Once I got into higher altitudes and uphill my MPG went to hell, truck was running in 4th and maybe 5th, had to switch the automatic trans into manual and watch it to keep it from redlining. I imagine if I lived in the area, long term fuel trim might kick in and it could get better, but I was flying solo with some basic hunting and camping gear.. If I had a fully loaded truck for a family camping trip, or was towing the duck boat, Id probably be in serious trouble.

8 Speed Automatic here and 4.88s are going in this Monday.

For me the single determining factor for 4.88 over 5.13...
