Im still running the stock 33’s on my Rubicon with 4.10 gears and only see 8th on flat or downhill or low/no wind conditions. Just the slightest change drops me into 7th. The only way I found to overcome this is to throw it into manual to hold it in 8th when cruising.

Pretty close to how mine works - but in the end, I still get good MPG and the power is great for non-towing. Will find out later how it handles towing a load. I've come to not expect that much 8th gear run time. It appears to be for ideal conditions, 65+, no wind, reasonably flat road.
That's fine. So the planetary sets for 8th last 200,000 miles and the rest only go 160,000 miles.

So with the 4:10 Gears in my JT I figure I might be able to get away with 34s. 285\75r-17 From Nitto. My JKU had 33 and 3.73 and was gutless.
  • OVERALL DIAMETER
    34.09
  • RIM WIDTH RANGE
    7.0 - 10.0

No 8 speed trans in that one (JK) though, right? Not saying the 34s wouldn't be a good match tho.

4.10 gears should put it at 2640 at 65 mph ?

I have 35" tires on my JT and recently recalibrated the tires with my Tazer JL mini. The other day I drove about 2.5 hours on the freeway and noticed that it rarely shifted into 8th gear. Usually only if I was on a slight decline. Is this normal for adding 35" tires or is there gear changes I can make with the Tazer to alter shift points?
New to tazer and don't want to go messing with gear ratios if I don't know what I'm doing.
Any input/ help would be appreciated.
8th gear? sound kind of greedy man...lol...you want big tires and good gas mileage? lol...I'm running 40's and never go above 6th unless I'm down hill. I have zero intention of re-gearing, couple reasons 1. My jeep hauls a$$ now seems to be faster than stock, i had it up to 105mph "In Mexico" lol 2. Feels very torquey 3. 4.10 ring and pinion much stronger than 5.13...more surface contact with teeth. Did you see the video of the hellcat gladiator breaking a rear axle shaft doing burnouts on dry concrete with brakes applied, ring and pinion were unscathed...the shaft however snapped...hopefully they come out with a 35 spline aftermarket axle soon

I don’t want to lug the engine that is not good for it. At least on long trips 2000rpms & up 2500 is good

I have 35” BFG KM3’s on my Rubicon with 4.10’s and she easily slides into 8th and stays there until there’s a pretty good incline. As far as RPM’s. On a flat highway with cruise set at 75 MPH, I’m at 2000 to 2100 RPM’s. Just finished a 1500 mile trip on interstates and that’s where she stayed consistently on level roads.

Me too. I just went on the local highway at 60 mph - 65 mph where the elevation increases gradually overall 350 feet over an 18-mile stretch. I was in 8th gear at least 90% of the time. East to West, so, if anything, the winds were unfavorable. 4.10 gears and 35" STTs.

I’ll add in and say for me with 35’s and 4.10s I see 8th a large chunk of the time on the highway. I really didn’t do a good job of watching it to compare with 33s, but it seems perfectly normal to me. I just ave to make sure to not compare it to my wife’s Durango that stays in 8th even more, but much smaller tires lol.

Ditto. 4.10 with 35s and in 8th a lot. I am, however, getting 15mpg at the moment(2k miles). Need to break it in some more....

If you want normal operation and 35`s, you're going to want to regear to 4.56

Or you can just accept the fact that 8th gear is no longer needed

You see a lot of differences in opinion because Rim and Tire weight also factor in to this equation. For example, a light rim and tire combo - like - Stock rim with K02 35s or 315x70x17 will do much better with the stock gearing than a heavy rim with a heavy tire... There will be a big difference.... So, if you want to try to stay with the stock gearing and big tires, go as light as possible.

Been there, done that! (Nitto 35s and Yukon 4.56s) Helps on the highways in CO with so many climbs to navigate. Frequently holds 8th gear doing 70-75 unless going uphill or headwind.

How long did it take you to break it in? I'm 1k miles on my 35s and at 17-18mpg on highway (but in KY we have long hills and lots of them for hours at a time)
