1k+ mile road trips across the desert are a regular occurance for us and anything below 85 feels like you're standing still. The semi's will be going around you in a regular basis.
It's 65 and 70 MPH highway speed limits where I'm at. When I drive 85, I am moving quite a bit faster than the flow of traffic. And you usually have to be aggressive passing in the right lane. There is often too much slower traffic to do 85.

Just wondering, what kind of highway MPG's you get with that?
Sorry, I don't know the highway MPG. I've honestly never measured it.

The dash is currently showing 18.4 MPG, but most of the miles are at 60 MPH or slower.

The terrain and wide open freeways in the West/Midwest are pretty unique. Many speed limits start with an 8. Even in the 75mph zones a highway patrol won't even budge if you're rolling 85. Ib wasn't advocating 85 in town, or a school zone, or even a 55mph highway. For my use I can confirm even our 3.5" lifted JLUR on 39s is comfortable and stable at 90mph. When/ where appropriate is rather be geared to take advantage of the double overdrives at those speeds than gear way down like some argue. The engine and trans see the exact same rpms and loads in 7th gear with 4.10s a they do in 8th with 5.13s. Our 1st gear is so low in the 8 speed I've never felt the need for more gearing at take off. We tried the low gears in our 2019 JLUR on 38s. 5.38s was way too low. Lost 2 mpgs on the freeway, it was in 8th at any speed over 40mph. Felt like we eliminated the b benefit of tall overdrives entirely for almost no gain.

It's so rare I drive my Jeep at 85-90 MPH. It wouldn't make any sense for me to gear based on those speeds. I'd rather gear deep because I'd always use it.

Different uses for sure. Our AZ property is 600 miles from our home in CA. My mojave sees 85mph for hours and hours every month. Hell it sees those speeds in the dirt monthly as well. That's what I bought it for. Even if my roadtrips were only 1 to 2 times a year is rather 8th actually be a high geared overdrive for those low load/ high speed scenarios than gear it so low that my 8 speed is in the top gear by half the legal speed limit with no where to shift from there. JLs come with 3.45s and 32s and do just fine on and off road. The gear range is so good on the 8 speed you can almost get away with any gears. Gone are the days of having to choose either crawling gears or highway gears like the old 3 and 4 speed days.

Ok...I started this thread and 97 post later we have some real progress. In post #75 wheelin98JT sent me a flyer on a Mopar Custom Calibration (inhouse) for a JL. So I shared it with the very uncordial service manager this morning. And I got this email in return:

Mopar Custom Calibration for 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL
and Jeep Gladiator

BULLETIN: 2019
-026 October 2, 2019
Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP) is pleased to announce that the Mopar Custom
Calibration is now available on Jeep Gladiators (JT).
The calibration is no longer needed on modifications to axle ratio or transfer case.
Option codes CALAXLE and CALTC have been expired.
The Mopar Custom Calibration is required on all Jeep Wranglers (JL) and Jeep
Gladiators (JT) that have been customized with oversized tires (33”+). Customized
Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators with larger tire modifications must have their
odometers and speedometers calibrated to be compliant with NHTSA odometer
reading standards and for both to have accurate readings. The software update for
the calibration will be charged to the customer via a Mopar Vehicle Protection
service contract.
When a customer customizes their Jeep Wrangler (JL) and Jeep Gladiator (JT) with
any of the above modifications or comes in to service a non-calibrated vehicle, the
following process should be followed.
• Sell customers the appropriate MVP Option code(s) via VINDriven or wiADVISOR
based on measurements taken of the modifications. (See next page)
• Tire option must be chosen first to populate other options.
• During the sales process, acknowledge the disclaimer pop up on VINDriven or
wiADVISOR and read to customer.
• MSRP is $125, Dealer Cost is $100. Charge will be visible within 30 days of purchase
of an MVP Calibration Contract.
• Once the MVP options have been purchased a technician performs calibration/
reconfiguration using wiTech. (see page 4)
• After the reconfiguration has been updated and the calibration verified, a claim is
to be submitted for reimbursement. Labor Operation number 18-19-58-CC for .2
hours is to be used to claim.

Tire Size Selection Process to Determine MVP Option Codes

BULLETIN: 2019
-026 October 2, 2019
For Technician Use:

TIRE SIZE SELECTION PROCESS:
1. Properly inflate tires to placard values.
2. IMPORTANT: Measure front left tire from top center of tire to ground, round to
nearest 1/2". Do not assume side wall value is correct.
3. Use measured tire size and select from tire size chart.
4. Input measurements into the MVP contract and complete contract process.
5. Test drive vehicle for speedometer accuracy and adjust as necessary.
• If speedometer reads slower than actual speed increase tire size by
1/2“
• If speedometer reads faster than actual speed decrease tire size by
1/2“

6. If speedometer is not accurately reporting vehicle speed (can be tested by
physically measuring rolling distance, using GPS, etc.), a call to the MVP
Application Hotline (800-541-4612) is required. The contract must be cancelled
so a new contract can be established with an updated tire size option
selected.

Time is money, 1,000 miles at 53mph is 19 hours. At 85mph it is 12 hrs. 7 hours of my time is worth far more than a couple tanks of gas especially since we make that type of trip 6-12 times per year. That's 2 full work weeks in time saved. I can buy gas for the year with 2 weeks of my time. Add in 2 weeks of the wife's time on top of that. I'll spend my time on the trails when I get to the destinations not on the freeway thanks. An extra 2 days wheeling in moab every trip as it's 1,100 each way from the house? Sign me up for the poor mpgs that come with getting their and back while saving 16 hours thank you.
You may have missed the part where I mentioned speed cameras, this is speed limit related, not a fuel savings excercise. The point was I still see 8th at those speeds!

It's this one you need to be sure they do:

5. Test drive vehicle for speedometer accuracy and adjust as necessary.

Make sure they test it at 75mph with a mobile phone GPS speed app (not the GPS speed on the radio, which is linked to the speedometer). The lower speeds are usually fine with a range of inputs, but at 75mph or faster, only one setting will be accurate. For my BFG KO2s in 315, I had to use a tire size an inch taller than what they measured while parked.

I have 35s with 3.73 for about 43k miles now. It doesn’t see 7th and 8th nearly as much as I’d like on a flat highway.
Did you also use some sort of app to change tire size?

I’ve been thinking of getting 35s for my non max tow sport s.

I use an AEV Procal.
Where do you live? (What type of driving do you mostly do / terrain / flat / hills etc?

18mph on 35s with 3.73 would be just fine in my book.

I would also plan on using JScan.

Southeast Michigan, Irish Hills area. A good mix of hills and flat. All on road. Lots of 2 lane road driving with 55 mph speed limits. Easy driving, not much hard accelerating.

A lot of good comments here and here’s my $0.02

when I upgraded my suspension and tires I spent a considerable amount of time looking at tire weight. As you might expect going from the factory FALKEN tires to 35’s of another brand resulted in potentially a lot of added rotational mass and coming from a Porsche racing background I understood how much even a pound or so of additional weight per corner will affect performance. Now my Gladiator is not in the same category as my Spyder but the physics are the same.

So I ended up going with Toyo‘s in a 11.5x35 and have been very happy with the result. In fact, given the Toyo’s are actually lighter that the Falkens I feel that they have significantly helped to mitigate the increase in diameter.

I just returned form a month long Overlanding trip from NC to Colorado, Utah and New Mexico traveling over 4500 miles in a very heavy rig and routinely was in 8th gear in the highway, unless I hit significant head winds like we did in Kansas where we ended up in 5/6 gear most of the time an our mileage dropped to about 12.5 mpg!

I did use the AEV Procal to change the cpu settings on the jeep and verified the accuracy, after several attempts, to get the speedometer correct. Keep in mind that even though you have 35” tires your actual rotational diameter will be less.

So in short I’m probably going to stay with my 4:10 gears. If for some reason I do change my mind I would just go up to 4:56’s. However, Brad at Trail Recon is building out his latest project, a JTR and he went with 5:13’s on 35’s. His reasoning is that in addition to building out a heavy rig he intends to tow a first aid trailer with it as well. Check him out if you don’t already follow him.
