Eh, HSS means "Hollow Structural Section" in my line of work. I had never heard of high speed steel until, now. You learn something new everyday if you pay attention! I can see how the abbreviation would be confusing.

Aside from the discussion here and circular reasoning, all this is conjecture and assumptions. The OP has not been forthcoming with all the details, total weight, speed, road conditions etc.

Though this conversation has been interesting, this is the third post I’ve seen by the OP in two places, and continually leaves out important information. With that said, there really hadn’t been a benefit to anyone in how this happened, though we have thoroughly discussed what HSS may stand for given the context.

for the most part, I’m thankful for you guys who do provide good answers and enough information to actually learn something, the the OP, we are on page ten here without you providing any additional information, stop trolling and looking for pity parties, either something was amis or you jacked something up, just own it and move on.

Apparently my thread was shut. Anyone know why?
Here are some shots I took before heading out..

At the time:

Watch this video. It might offer some clues.

Yeah, looks like the one I posted earlier - and the comments section has some good info as well. Another engineer chimed in.
Bottom lines -
Frames DO bend (there's proof all over the place)
They don't bend under normal use (otherwise I might be in some trouble as I load cars onto my trailer and the bed settles down in front)
There's photographic proof that frames do bend.
There are engineers explaining how and why, where they are likely to give and for what reason.
HSS if you google it is high speed steel - however in the last 10 years the advent of advanced high strength and high strength steel means works like gay apparel no longer means cheerful clothing. Best to triple check when doing searches - the default may not be your intent.

Better be stainless!
Which grade - some stainless does indeed rust, just takes longer and harsher conditions. (no reflection on his wife intended!)

Here's proof they bend, and in the area it was designed to bend in an accident. This is the frame's intended crumple zone - intended to bend downwards as is very obvious just from the shape and design - and it did just that.

Was there any pictures of the actual frame?

I'm betting the bed bent instead with all the weight.

Possible - we've seen NO pictures.
If that happened, no wonder Jeep didn't compare their truck bed to GM and Ford by dropping a load of rock in the back LOL

Need to remember that the frame is not reinforced like a trophy truck to prevent from warping when you beat the shit out of it. The warping can be pretty small where things still drive straight but you'd notice body lines not lining up evenly. There's a reason professional race trucks and pre-runners had a ton of cross bracing. And I don't just mean a beam from one frame to the other

Actually it's designed so the rear of the frame goes down and the frame sort of surrounds the differential. The frame is not designed to bend up at the rear, it's made to bend down like an up-side-down V.
We need to look at it not as a bend up in the middle, but a bend down at the rear. There is no bend "up". The middle is where it belongs, the rear is down.

I thought he originally said it was a receiver mount spare carrier.......... that moves the weight way back and gives it a lot more mechanical advantage vs. a spare in the stock position.
Ya I was just referencing the appearance of the bend and he did say he had a hitch mounted spare tire carrier.

if they're saying nogo cause of that scrape on the hitch, go buy a hitch to replace yours and then take it back in.
To me if it was from the hitch getting hit/scrapped , the bend would be going in the opposite direction. Looking at the pics it appears he was towing something way to heavy, NOT something scraping and pushing up on the hitch. Its bending down towards the back, not up towards the center.... Thoughts ?

I disagree. The scrape could be part of the results after or just before the flex. Imagine a heavy hitch load and you hit a compression on the road surface. The hitch bottoms out on the road THEN the trailer hits the compression and loads up the tongue weight.
Just a theory.
splitting hairs.... regardless it appears to have been overloaded. I'm not sure at this point if we will ever find out the truth. Seems OP is fishing for backup theories to tell the dealership to have it covered.

I'm curious as to what that dragged on to so completely scrape it and so deeply.
I mean - that really dragged on something - either backed over something or down a dip and back out and the back end dragged on the way out of a deep dip or ravine.
almost like he backed into something and it dragged so hard it pulled the bed down and bent it ???
