Pulled this today with my 22sd. 1920 empty, about 1100 in it? Only spiked to 221 oil temp when I really pushed it on a freeway merge. 45*f and just about sea level. Liked to sit between 215-217 cruising.

I forget who else is running a cooler like mine.. was it you ?? If so it seems to be helping if not your temps are obviously in good shape regardless.

Not I sir. Stock. I'm hoping to use it a little harder in the future. Pull project cars etc.

In prep for the trip I swung into Val. Instant oil change today and had the rear diff oil changed. 21k on the truck and I just wanted fresh fluid before the trip. I also swapped my fuel filter. Hard to find locally but found a dealer that had 4 so I bought 2. Can’t find an air filter yet.. had probably 10 k on the fuel filter. I know it says good for 30k but I feel every 10 to 15 is enough fuel though it.

20k replacement interval on the fuel filter, drain every 10k.....Every other oil change if you are running a higher quality synthetic oil and do longer trips.

Ok hear me out.

What about this cooler:

Mounted in the red section on this bumper:

Mounted inline to the factory oil cooler lines so it passes through the radiator fluid heat exchanger then through this cooler then return to engine? I believe that is how it functions now with a radiator oil cooler, correct?

I would cut a hole in the skidplate and put some protective mesh.

This would give you full flow and much more CFM through the cooler?

Nothing to reach close to the level of the ram 1500 cooling that owners get easily:

Nevermind i see now that it has a oil cooller/filter assembly with coolant passing through it and NOT a radiator mounted oil cooler/heat exchanger like some engines have.

Do we really not have ANY external mounted oil lines or coolers?

That is crazy.

Yea I can’t find any access to the oil supply without the filter bypass kit. My other thought was to tap the pan with a three way valve on the drain plug port. Then run a pump to suck from the pan and use the bypass kit in-line with the cooler to return the oil back through the filler neck. If I don’t see the results I want over the summer I will do that method and go back to using the factory oil filter. I’ll just pump from the pan through the external filter then through the cooler and back into the filler neck. This would increase oil volume through the cooler and should cool the oil substantially. If I can pump gallons per minute through the cooler via an external pump then I can throttle the volume to what works best in any given situation. One would still benefit from the added filter and the Ease of return with the filler neck return. I leave for myrtle in 10 days so we will see how she works!

I wonder how much different the 2 gen is to the 3rd gen in regards to the factory oil cooler. There is a company up in Canada that makes an oil cooler adapter plate. If there is no difference between the 2 generations. It would be simple to run 2 hoses and a cooler.

You would have to cross reference the two oil cooler/ filter housing part numbers. I have not done that yet.

You said its a 10% bypass? How is the flow controlled to your cooler? Like when does the bypass open is it pressure related?

I ilke the idea of that plate that deletes the problematic FCA oil cooler setups. With that you could bend some hardlines then swap to AN lines and put a cooler with full flow somewhere thats air cooled and isolate the oil from the coolant system.

That seems like a really strong setup. Plus it will only push the same amount of oil factory and return it immediately into the engine.

Now we are cookin.

I don't see how we could find the space for an oil/air cooler large enough to where we could eliminate the OE installed oil/water cooler while still have it tucked into a place protected from airborne debris.

I still think the best solution is just adding in a small aux oil/air cooler.

The volume is controlled by the size of the hole in the filter housing it will only flow so much fluid.

Except that the factory oil cooler is water cooled with the radiator....which is usually heating your oil. Separating it to an outside cooler with vans would help ALOT and take the load off the radiator cooling. Did you see the bumper I posted above with a large lower skid plate? That does hang low but the skidplate and lower frame horns would protect it. You could possibly carry a bypass hose in case of trail damage?
