Genuinely curious...

Is the reason for the adapter b/c the housing is plastic and prone to cracking or b/c the filter itself sucks?

The factory setup is completely fine and sufficient. The aftermarket is for those who want to play with their vehicles and do something different.

proprietary MOPAR filter.
The Mopar filter isn't a proprietary filter. There are lot of aftermarket filters that you can use rather than Mopar.

The whole design of that filter is dumb and introduces more failure points. They are incredibly picky about how they are installed and will either kick a low oil pressure warning if put on with a tiny bit too much torque or break.

Yes.

The previous owner of my truck must have broken the filter housing, because mine is aluminum.

I just replaced mine yesterday, 2 weeks after replacing the ignition coils and spark plugs

I just wasn't sure if the reason for the adapter was the housing or the filter sucks.

Unlike the 3.6L, the stock factory filter housing on our ecodiesels always has been aluminum. See here: https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/anatomy-of-the-oil-cooler-and-filter-housing.61474/
The filter design is still crap, if I use an inch-lb torque wrench to tighten that filter to the exact Jeep spec I get low oil pressure warnings. The window between “doesn’t back off” and “doesn’t cause problems” is way too small. Plus, having a larger filter element for a diesel would be way better than that tiny thing.

I reached out to Kevin at Baxter last year and was told they were considering some EcoDiesel upgrade parts. I am specifically interested in an oil cooler upgrade option, which I suspect will include part of this line.

The Gen 3 oil filter caps are sometimes difficult to thread by hand. It's not as smooth or easy as the Gen 2 EcoDiesel. Even a torque wrench will sometimes activate long before it's bottomed out. I use a large ratchet to get it close to bottoming out, then use the torque wrench to torque to spec. I tend to overtighten things, so the torque wrench is more to keep me from overtorquing vs undertorquing.

The issue with most adapter kits is that you are reducing oil pressure.

No argument there, just pointing out that the ecodiesel filter housing never has been plastic.

I'm curious to see how this works out as I've never particularly cared much for cartridge style filters, and care even less for the needlessly expensive version of filter they decided to use on the 3rd gen ecodiesel.
