Diesel cooling options and ideas

maybe i have missed something, but your ruby open vent tests, you used some sort of fine screen/filter material to prevent rain intrusion? Did you do a test with no screen fabric also? I ask because mesh that fine will only have a open area less then 50% which means already small openings are only flowing at 50% capacity.

I opened my vents and cut full size holes in the insulation matching the size of the full vent and staggered the holes in the insulations so water would land on the top side of the insulation and shed down. Anyway i digress, when parked i can feel heat coming through the vents if i hold my hand above them, which tells me they are flowing.

If Jeep was able to cool the 392 under the same constraints you would think they could figure it out with the 3.0. Does anyone know if the 392 radiator is different and if it could be a direct replacement

392 is 68481174AB and 3.0 is 68314786AC. 786 has these specs

and the 392 I could not find.

No you’re right the mesh is blocking any benefit I could have gotten, I didn’t run the test with the mesh removed, mainly because that’s not how I’ll be running it due to our nearly constant rain fall for 9 months a year. Probably should have just to see if the rubicon vents without the mesh could have drawn hot air out at speed. I wonder if they have any low pressure dynamics built into them. If the oem don’t I wonder if the ones by Valkrie off-road do? (Without the mesh of course)

At a stop I can feel hot air coming out of the open cowl corners, but that didn’t translate to any additional cooling effect at speed, under load or no load. I’m mainly looking to see if there’s anything we can do to reduce engine bay pressures to enhance airflow through the oem cooling stack and make it work a little more efficiently. The other alternative is a better radiator and/or auxiliary oil coolers.

Thanks for your clarification. Not trying to be a dick but with the mesh installed it creates a bias in your report that some speed readers may miss and take your info as gods word

Could you post some pictures of how you did this? Seeing how restrictive the mesh is I’m interested in any way to remove that restriction, keep the vents open and shed the water. If I can do that I’ll probably look into testing these Valkyrie vents

FYI water is not a big deal. Ive run open vents on vehicles for years. Unless it can pool up on top of the engine and drown sensors which if you keep the original engine cover on it cannot.

I ran these through mopar parts and if irecall the 3.6l 3.0l and hemi all had the same exact radiator core part number. The 2.0L had something different listed.

Venting is not the solution as the op states. You need to cool the oil and or coolant. Or those testing meth injection might find keeping egts low could very well be the solution.

Did some checking on this today. Called Marcus @River City Offroad https://www.rivercityoffroad.com/
And asked him to do some checking about this. He contacted Bubba at Exodus 4x4 who said no the radiator from 392 JL won’t fit. He also sent me this screenshot from Scott Blum @ Jeep.

kind of a bummer, but now we know.
