Would it be better to try to cool the oil more or the coolant more to solve the overheat/derate problem? I guess both in a perfect world,
I was just trying to help with a workable solution.
Increasing oil capacity gives the oil more time to rest and cool before its cycled back through the engine. I saw a noticeable difference by going from a 10.5-quart system to a 12-quart system with a deep oil pan on my 2015 EcoDiesel. The downside is it takes longer to get the oil up to operating temperature in the winter months.

Even though I don’t tow with my Jt I feel everyone’s pain. Our yearly trip to Moab takes us through Amarillo to Albuquerque and the wind is brutal. I sometimes have to run 60 on the super slab even though I have compound turbos, injectors and plenty of power. EGT’s climb and we have to slow way down. Frustrating.

You guys are making progress though. I'm sure a solution will be found, I plan on keeping my diesel JL and JT for a long time and I'm sure most of you do too.

I was out running errands today and watching the oil and coolant temps. Coolant hung out around 205 and oil temp stayed around 217. This was with 34 degree outside temp. I was thinking it would be of more benefit to cool the oil. Came up with this idea: Weld two fittings in oil pan one on each side and one higher than the other. Run a suction from low fitting through a pump, through a spin on filter housing (with one quart filter), to an air to fluid cooler then back to the pan through the other fitting, This would keep the engine oil pump out of the equation, add volume and cooling. What do all think?
217F is a great temp to evaporate off moisture. You want the oil to be that high and even a little higher.

I can’t unequivocally say that the grill alone will dramatically improve the situation as I installed the new grill, BPD supplementary cooler, and Mish. radiator at the same time.

The combination of those three things has pretty much addressed my problems — I tow/haul at max capacity regularly up steep grades and the derate issues had me contemplating the idea of getting another vehicle.

In person, the additional open space on the 24 grill does appear substantial.
Primer Gray is the Toyota inverter cooler still working for you?

@Primer Gray, please consider working with a fab shop who can build these under license and maybe give you a cut.
Hey Mr Sweetums,

The problem with making these is volume.

The interesting thing about this group is that we will spend years compiling thousands of posts about this issue but every time I actually have some of these available it takes forever for someone to actually commit to taking one off my hands.

Of course once they are gone the group starts to ask for one again…

I can kinda see why BPD diluted their efforts because it is so difficult to actually make an offering viable for such a small group.

Only thing motivating me to do so is that I’m an enthusiast and am acting on selfish motives.

Happy to share the 3d file with anyone who wants to go down the rabbit hole solo — just message me.

These cad files are all in 3d, you’d need to work with a fabricator that has the ability to unroll the model into a 2d drawing according to their needs and capabilities.
